Hello everyone,

I plan to modify my Ikea Besta shelving unit to accommodate various electronic devices. Specifically, I am looking for a way to equip the furniture piece with an integrated power outlet, so I can plug my devices directly into it without visible cable clutter. Ideally, the solution should fit well into the existing shelving and be safe to use.

Does anyone know of practical approaches or products to retrofit the Ikea Besta with such an integrated power supply? Which electrical components would you recommend, and are there any special modules or instructions available?

Thanks in advance for your advice and experiences!

At first, that sounds practical, but honestly: do you really want to install a power outlet inside a piece of furniture? This often causes more problems than it solves. Fire hazards, difficult access for maintenance, and so on. It’s often better to find alternative solutions. Why not use simple power strips neatly routed through cable ducts?

It doesn’t always have to be high-tech, and Ikea furniture is not designed for electrical installations. Safety considerations should be taken into account before making modifications without proper planning.

I’m a bit more relaxed about it 😄 Of course, safety is important, but with some planning, having an outlet inside a Besta can look really good and be very practical—without significant risks. For example, you can use a power strip that simply sits inside and combine it with cable grommets.

These then become almost invisible, and you get less cable clutter. However, I would measure carefully beforehand and check how much space you have—otherwise, it quickly gets tight inside the shelf.

Also: cable management is key; otherwise, even the best outlet in the furniture won’t help 😉

Oh, I love DIY projects with Ikea furniture! 😊

For example, you could use a slim power strip with USB ports and attach it at the bottom or back of the Besta unit. Then add some cable casing or small ventilation slots to prevent the electronics from overheating.

I once did something like that: routed the cables through a cut-out in the back panel and installed a slim USB power strip. It looks really stylish and is very practical! Just make sure all connections are secure and no cables are pinched.

Get motivated—this kind of project is a lot of fun!

For reintegrating power outlets into an Ikea Besta furniture unit, I recommend the following approach:

- Use tested power strips with surge protection and adequate capacity for the intended devices.
- Install the outlets behind the furniture to ensure safe heat dissipation and electrical installation.
- Provide cable routing with appropriate strain relief and fire protection.
- Do not drill or mill directly into the furniture without knowledge of electrical safety regulations.
- If a fixed installation is planned, consult a qualified professional to meet the requirements of VDE standards.

This minimizes potential hazards and ensures safe usage.

Installing power strips in the back panel is the easiest option. Drill holes for the cables and arrange them neatly. Direct installation into side walls is not recommended. Make sure to carefully check for enough space and ventilation.
