I have noticed for some time that the doors on my IKEA Billy bookcase sometimes stick slightly when I open or close them. The question I have is: why do some BILLY doors stick a little? At first glance, all the doors seem to be installed and adjusted the same way, yet there are differences in how smoothly they move. Could it be due to the installation, or is it more likely related to material variations or changes caused by environmental factors? If anyone has experienced this or knows the cause, I would like to learn more to find a suitable solution.

Your question is very well formulated and important for anyone who owns a BILLY shelf. Door sticking often occurs due to the following reasons: 1. Inaccurate installation – small deviations in hinge alignment can cause the door not to fit perfectly in the opening. 2. Warping of the wood – especially with temperature changes or high humidity, the MDF or particleboard of the shelf can swell or warp. 3. Dirt or damage on the hinges or door edges. Precise adjustment of the hinges or carefully sanding small areas of the door often solves the issue. It is important not to force the door closed, as this can make the problem worse.

First, check if the door is perfectly level. Tighten the hinges if necessary. Sometimes, just a bit of sanding on the edge that sticks is enough.

I also had this problem with my BILLY cabinet. In addition to the causes mentioned, I would add that it often happens because the doors don’t sit completely flush against the cabinet. This can occur if the back panel is slightly warped or if one side of the cabinet is somewhat misaligned. In such cases, I recommend placing the cabinet on a level surface and, if necessary, adjusting the back panel or the sides slightly. This helps the doors close more smoothly and reduces sticking.

Hey, great question! I had the same issue and it was really annoying 🙂 But then I simply readjusted the hinges and lightly sanded the edges. It also helps not to tighten the screws too much so there’s some play. 🙂 Sometimes the wood warps a bit due to the season, so you need patience and some fine-tuning!

To better identify the reasons for slight sticking of BILLY doors, here is a brief guide for checking and correcting the issue:

1. Check the hinges: Are they properly installed and securely screwed in? Looseness can cause misalignment.
2. Measure the door dimensions: Doors may swell or warp slightly due to moisture. Small unevenness can be detected by placing a spirit level (bubble level) against the door.
3. Shelf unit installation: Are the feet of the BILLY shelf really standing on a flat, even floor? Uneven surfaces can affect the door alignment.
4. Door adjustment: If the door sticks, carefully sand down the contact areas with sandpaper. Always remove only small amounts of material and test the door movement afterward.

I recommend working through these steps systematically and checking the door movement after each one. This helps avoid unnecessary damage and precisely identifies the cause.
