Hello everyone,
I recently bought a Billy shelf from Ikea and found that the supplied screws are generally sufficient, but I’m curious about what alternatives exist to the included Billy screws. More specifically, I’m interested in screws that could be used instead if you want stronger, more corrosion-resistant, or simply higher-quality fasteners without compromising the shelf’s stability.
Does anyone have experience with replacement screws for Billy that match in length and thread profile? Maybe stainless steel screws or special wall plugs that hold better in different wall materials?
I look forward to your recommendations and details about what you use and why. Thanks!

Good point about alternatives to the Billy screws!
Here is a brief overview:
1. Screw type: Billy typically uses particleboard screws with coarse threads, often M4 or M4.5.
2. Material: Stainless steel screws are ideal if there is moisture in the room, to prevent corrosion.
3. Length: The originals are approximately 35–40mm (1.4–1.6 inches) long; replacement screws should have the same length to ensure stability.
4. Anchors: For mounting the shelf into masonry, concrete, or hollow blocks, I recommend using suitable nylon or metal anchors along with screws that have metric threads.
It is important to always consider the hole size of the pre-drilled shelf parts so that the screw and anchor fit properly.
Summary: Stainless steel particleboard screws M4, 40mm (1.6 inches), combined with good-quality anchors, are a practical alternative.

I just bought some screws from the Fischer brand – stainless steel, M4, 40 mm (1.6 inches), with matching wall plugs. They hold much better than the standard ones that come with Ikea furniture and even look nicer. 😄
Tip: Don’t use screws that are too long or too short, or the shelf might be unstable, or you risk damaging the material. I’ve been happy with the Fischer screws so far – easy installation and no rust issues 🙂

I would like to briefly add a comment here.
This is basically correct, but you should also consider whether the shelf depth or wall structure makes using this screw type appropriate.
Stability depends not only on the screw thickness but also on the correct anchor and its proper installation. Some inexpensive replacement screws might be made of lower-quality steel, which can cause problems over time.
Therefore, I recommend using high-quality stainless steel screws combined with anchors suited to the wall type (e.g., hollow wall anchors for drywall). The original screws are often just a compromise solution aimed at cost reduction—not necessarily the best technical choice.
Anyone seeking real stability and durability should carefully consider the combination of screw type, anchor, and material quality as a whole.

Look for screws with M4 threads and about 40mm length (1.5 inches).
