Hello everyone, I have a question that might be interesting for many users of IKEA KALLAX shelves, especially those using the white version:

Are there practical and aesthetically pleasing decoration ideas to prevent or at least significantly reduce fading effects on white KALLAX shelves?

I’ve noticed that white KALLAX can start to look faded or slightly yellowed in some areas over time, either due to sunlight exposure or from scratches and wear. Unfortunately, this quickly makes the furniture look old and unclean, giving the whole piece a somewhat shabby appearance.

Therefore, I’m interested in which decorative techniques, materials, or additional accessories are effective to visually counteract this kind of fading without having to completely repaint the furniture or use expensive specialty products. Maybe there are also simple DIY tips that have worked well for you.

I look forward to your suggestions and experiences!

Great question! To address this issue specifically, I recommend a systematic approach:

1. Understand the cause: UV light, dust, and minor scratches are often the main reasons for the so-called 'fade-out' effect on white surfaces.

2. Sun protection: One option is to apply translucent but UV-filtering window films or position the shelf so it is not directly exposed to sunlight.

3. Decoration ideas to reduce visual fatigue:

- Half or full backdrops: Casual decorative back panels made from leftover wallpaper, textiles, or films in pastel or contrasting colors can visually help break up the plain white surface.

- Decorative elements: Hanging plants, decorative baskets, and colored storage boxes (for example, in pastel tones or wood finishes) add variety and divert attention from discoloration.

4. Material care: For frequently used surfaces, apply special furniture care products. Use a mild furniture wax or specific sealants sparingly and thinly to protect the white finish.

5. Regular cleaning: Dust attracts dirt and promotes an unattractive appearance; gentle, regular wiping prevents this effect.

In summary: Decorations with color and texture help a lot, UV filters and shelf positioning prevent the problem, and care products delay fading. Hope this helps you and others!

Especially if you use the white version: Are there practical and aesthetically pleasing decoration ideas to avoid or at least significantly reduce fade-out effects on white KALLAX shelves?

To add: Fade-out effects on white shelves are mainly caused by UV light and everyday abrasive wear. An elegant, minimally invasive solution is to cover the affected surfaces with printed or textured vinyl films. These films come in various designs, are easy to apply, and help protect against further fading.

Alternatively, textile elements—such as fabric covers or decorative shelf inserts with woven surfaces—can be used. These absorb light while also providing visual contrast.

For all DIY solutions, it is important to note the care instructions: avoid using aggressive cleaning agents. The white surfaces are usually only melamine-coated, making them sensitive.

If the shelf is placed on a wall with strong sun exposure, installing a UV protective film on the windows is the most effective way to extend the appearance’s durability.

Half or full backdrops made from wallpaper remnants, fabrics, or films in pastel or contrasting colors break up the impression and help visually.

That’s exactly what I did. I applied self-adhesive film to the backs, using a contrasting color. The result: the fade-out is hardly noticeable anymore because the eye is drawn to the decoration.

You can also use boxes with patterns or colors placed throughout the shelving. Practical and stylish.
