Hello everyone,

I am planning to move soon and have a large Kallax shelving unit that I want to transport intact. My question is whether there are specific protective solutions for the corners of a Kallax unit to prevent damage such as chipping or scratches during the move.

I am aware of various general protective materials like foam corner guards or edge protectors that can be used for furniture, but is there anything specifically designed for Kallax corners? Or does anyone have experience with the best way to protect these vulnerable areas without causing additional damage or making the unit difficult to handle?

It would also be helpful to know if these protective products are available ready-made or if you usually have to make your own.

Thanks for your advice!

Regarding your question about transport protection for Kallax corners: There are no specific protection products made exclusively for Kallax. However, common edge protectors made of foam or soft plastic, which you can cut to size, are suitable.

It is important that the protection is not too tight to avoid putting extra stress on the wood, but also not too loose to prevent it from slipping during transport. You can also wrap the shelf with protective film to avoid scratches on the surfaces.

If you have multiple shelves, it is worthwhile to cushion all corners well before packing and secure them with stretch film.

Wow, this topic is really exciting! 😃 I also had a Kallax during my last move and actually made some corner protectors myself from foam rubber – they work really well!!!

The great thing is that foam rubber is soft, flexible, and provides excellent impact protection. Just cut the corners to size, fix them with double-sided tape, and then wrap the whole piece well in bubble wrap.

That’s true, which is why DIY is a great solution! Good luck, you can do it! 🙂

I would like to explain why the corners of Kallax shelves are particularly vulnerable: the edges are often quite sharp, and since the shelf is usually made of particleboard or MDF, they can easily chip or tear when bumped.

General edge protection is therefore advisable. Recommended are foam edge protectors with a thickness of at least 1-2 cm (0.4-0.8 inches), as these provide sufficient cushioning. Simply search for "furniture edge protectors" at your local hardware store or online.

Unfortunately not, but the size of the corners is manageable, so custom-cut edge protectors fit perfectly. Additionally, you can wrap everything with stretch film or blankets to keep it all in place.

If you are transporting it yourself, make sure the shelf does not tip over during transport and is not pressed between other heavy items.

Hello 🙂

I agree with the previous tips and would like to add something about handling. Sometimes the Kallax is simply wrapped in a large blanket for protection, and the corners are then padded with old towels or terry cloth towels. If you secure everything with stretch wrap, not much can really go wrong.

Exactly, and EVA foam is also widely available – perfect for last-minute solutions.

So, don’t overcomplicate things; often the good old household odds and ends and a bit of creativity are enough. Good luck! 😉

If you want pre-cut protection: foam edge protectors are available at any hardware store. Simply cut them to length, secure them, and you’re done. For the corners, you can easily adjust the protectors with a knife.
