Hello everyone,
I recently bought some furniture with so-called Billy foil surfaces and am now wondering what kind of care is best for this type of surface to keep it looking good and undamaged for as long as possible. Are there any specific cleaning products or care treatments that you would recommend? Should aggressive cleaners be avoided, or would mild cleaners be better? What are your experiences, especially regarding the durability and shine of the foil?
I look forward to your tips and advice!

Hello TIMEKEN,
For Billy foil surfaces, it is important to choose gentle care. These foils are usually not real wood surfaces but a type of plastic film applied on top. This means that aggressive cleaners or solvents can damage or dissolve the surface.
I recommend cleaning the surfaces regularly with a soft, slightly damp cloth and mild dish soap. Important: do not use abrasive cleaners or products containing alcohol or ammonia! Microfiber cloths are also great because they clean gently and do not cause scratches.
If you want to maintain the foil, special furniture care products for plastic surfaces or very mild care oils can be used, but sparingly. Usually, simply wiping clean is enough to preserve the shine.
If you want more specific product recommendations or application tips, feel free to ask!

It’s great that you’re doing such thorough research! 🙂 Billy films are very versatile but quite sensitive to harsh cleaners. I always use a soft cloth and warm water with a mild soap solution for cleaning. After cleaning, I gently buff with a dry cloth to bring back the shine. This keeps the surface looking bright 🙂 Try it this way, and you’ll see how well the film stays beautiful!
Hey,
I completely agree with the others! 🙂 To add, for maintenance you can use a furniture care product suitable for coated surfaces, but avoid oil or wax treatments. These could cause unpleasant residues on foil surfaces. It is important that the care product contains no solvents so nothing gets dissolved.
Sometimes, simply cleaning with a glass of diluted vinegar water (1:10) can help. It acts as a mild disinfectant and cleans thoroughly. However, don’t use it too often, as it can gradually wear down the surface.

Thanks in advance for the detailed answers!
I have two more questions:
Could you or someone else please explain in more detail how to tell if a cleaning product is gentle enough? Are there certain ingredients to avoid on the label?
Also, I’m wondering: Do the original Billy furniture pieces have any care instructions, or do the manufacturers recommend specific cleaning agents?
Thank you very much for your tips!
