Hello everyone,

I have an IKEA BESTÅ sideboard, and I noticed that the doors no longer close properly, or in some spots they rub slightly. I suspect the hinges need adjustment because the alignment doesn’t seem correct anymore. My question is: How can I adjust the hinges on an IKEA BESTÅ piece of furniture myself to restore the proper closing and alignment of the doors?

I’ve seen that the hinges have several adjustment options, but I’m unsure which screws control which function and what the best way is to adjust the door panel laterally or in depth, for example.

I would appreciate a detailed explanation or tips based on your own experience. Thanks in advance!

Hello kupeso,

Your question is very good and quite justified, as IKEA BESTÅ hinges can be adjusted fairly flexibly thanks to their adjustability. Here is a brief step-by-step guide on how to properly align the doors again:

- First, it is important to know that most BESTÅ hinges have three adjustment screws.

- The side screw (often the one closest to the front) is used to adjust the door horizontally, meaning to bring the door closer to or further away from the carcass.

- A second screw, usually positioned slightly further back on the hinge, adjusts the door in depth, controlling how far it protrudes or is recessed when closed.

- The third screw regulates the height adjustment, allowing you to move the door up or down.

Here is the recommended procedure:
1. Open the door and do not fully loosen the screws; instead, turn them slightly to change the setting.
2. Adjust one screw at a time, then check the position of the door.
3. If the door rubs on one side, this is usually corrected by the horizontal adjustment.
4. Finally, tighten the screws again, but not too tightly to avoid damaging the threads.

A common mistake is turning several screws at the same time or making too large adjustments at once, so proceed slowly.

I hope this helps you move forward.

I completely agree! I once had the exact same problem with misaligned doors on my BESTÅ. Taking a calm, patient approach really helped me. Sometimes the fear of causing damage is quite strong, but the hinges are more durable than you might think.

My tip: Before making major adjustments, take photos of the screw positions so you have a reference in case you need to revert changes.

Also, it’s helpful to have someone hold the door while you adjust it – this saves a lot of effort and reduces trial and error. It’s really about small steps; often, you only notice improvements after a few tests.

The side screw adjusts the door horizontally, the rear screw controls the depth, and the top screw adjusts the height. Always turn only one screw at a time, test the door, and readjust if necessary.

In addition to the previous advice, I would like to add:

- Make sure the hinges are clean, as dirt can interfere with the mechanism.
- It is best to use a Phillips screwdriver of the correct size to avoid damaging the screw heads.
- If the door sticks unusually badly, also check the hinge attachment to the cabinet/frame.
- To ensure the adjustments remain secure over time, I recommend tightening the screws with the appropriate torque so they do not loosen again.

The entire adjustment is an interaction of these components, and it is worth approaching it systematically.
