I would like to make my Billy bookcase childproof and am considering installing childproof hinges to prevent unsafe opening by children. Since many of you likely have experience with IKEA furniture and safety devices, I’m interested in how to equip the BILLY bookcase with childproof hinges without compromising its appearance or functionality too much.
Specifically, I’m curious about which types of childproof hinges are suitable for this purpose, how complex the installation is, and if there are any tips to ensure long-term stability and safe use.
I would appreciate any advice on reliable products, recommended installation methods, and potential issues to watch out for.

Hello Sigismund,
Your plan to equip the BILLY shelving unit with childproof hinges is understandable and quite sensible. To ensure you know exactly what to consider, I will explain step by step what is important:
First, you should check which types of hinges are compatible, as BILLY shelves in the standard version are often fitted with simple pivot hinges. For child safety, so-called "soft-close and safety hinges" are particularly suitable; these include a kind of latch mechanism or spring that makes it harder for children to accidentally open the door.
Installation is usually done by screwing the hinges to the frame and the door, so you need to make sure that your door thickness is compatible. Sometimes the drilling of the hinge holes can be an issue – I recommend using a template and strictly observing the drilling depth, since IKEA furniture is often made of thin particleboard.
Hinges with integrated soft-close are practical because they prevent slamming, reducing the risk of pinching small fingers. For installation, you should also consider whether to secure the shelving unit additionally with edge protectors or locks, as hinges alone cannot completely eliminate the risk.
One last recommendation: avoid cheap no-name products. Opt for proven brands for child safety, even if the price is higher. I would be happy to tell you which products fit exactly. What are the dimensions of your BILLY shelving unit, and what kind of doors are you using? Sometimes modifying the doors, for example by adding an extra frame, is useful if the hinge mounting points are not ideal.
Good luck with your project! Feel free to get in touch with more information!

Hi,
the best option is special child safety hinges with a spring, which you install instead of the regular hinges. These prevent children from opening the door. Simply remove the door, unscrew the old hinge, attach the new one to the cabinet, and screw the door back on. Done.

I wonder if simply using child-safe hinges is really enough to make a BILLY bookshelf childproof.
I find this statement very important because children quickly develop tricks to bypass such mechanisms. Wouldn’t it be better to use a combined solution, for example hinges plus some kind of external lock?
Additionally, I see the problem that with IKEA shelves, the doors are often not solid enough to securely attach heavy-duty hinges. Has anyone had experience with reinforcements to keep children safely away?

In summary, the following technical aspects should be considered:
1. Hinge selection: Child-safe hinges with integrated safety locks or spring mechanisms are recommended.
2. Material: The doors of the BILLY shelving unit are usually made of fiberboard with a surface layer, which can make installing heavy-duty hinges difficult. Reinforcing the door (e.g., with an additional wooden panel) increases its load capacity.
3. Installation: Screws should be used with wall plugs or thread-locking adhesive to prevent loosening.
4. Functionality: A soft-close feature prevents injuries caused by slamming doors.
5. Certification: It is advisable to choose products that have undergone child safety testing (e.g., GS mark).
As a result, I recommend using a combination of child-safe hinges plus additional locking mechanisms tailored to the specific dimensions of the BILLY shelving unit.

Oh, that sounds like a great project! 🙂 I think it’s fantastic that you want to make your BILLY shelf childproof. That’s really important, especially when there are small children around!
I’ve tried two options for my apartment: first, childproof hinges with a spring (mounted directly on the doors), and second, magnetic locks that you activate from the outside. Both methods work great, and I use them depending on the situation.
My advice: if you’re a bit handy, try both options! I’m happy to see your shelf childproofed soon—this shows that you can achieve a lot with simple solutions! 🙂
