Hello everyone, I am currently working on lighting for my IKEA KALLAX shelves and wondering if there are any plug-and-play lighting systems that can be easily integrated without much effort. It is important to me that these systems are specifically designed for the KALLAX and require little to no drilling or complicated wiring. Does anyone know of reliable solutions that can be purchased ready-made and installed simply, ideally with RGB options or dimmable features? I look forward to your tips and experiences!
Hello TAFUKAU, I have been working with furniture lighting for a long time and have also installed lighting in several KALLAX units. Basically, the market for plug-and-play lighting for KALLAX is somewhat fragmented. There are no official IKEA LED accessory systems that are exactly tailored, but many third-party manufacturers offer modular LED strips with suitable mounting clips. It is important to pay attention to the following points:
1. Power supply: USB vs. power adapter
2. Mounting: Adhesive tape holds well, but magnets and clips are often neater and leave no residue.
3. Control: Bluetooth, remote control, app, or even voice control.
Regarding installation: adjustments are usually minimal, such as trimming an LED strip. I have seen very few complete sets with KALLAX-specific brackets so far. Personally, I 3D-printed brackets because the shelf standard dimensions can vary a lot depending on whether there is a back panel or not. Can you specify exactly which model (size and version) you have? Then I can give you more targeted advice.

Especially if you don’t have much tooling at home or aren’t very skilled with DIY, all the trial and error can be frustrating. Maybe it will help in your search to also pay attention to reviews and pictures from other buyers who specifically mention KALLAX as the place of use. This way, you can better assess whether the system fits your shelving unit.

Could you specify which model (size and version) you have? Sure! I have the classic KALLAX shelf, 4x4 compartments, white color, with a back panel. The dimensions are approximately 147 x 147 cm (58 x 58 inches). I mainly want the lighting for the individual compartments, so inside the cubes, to highlight specific areas. There are no power outlets directly at the shelf’s location, so a USB-powered or wireless option would be ideal. It’s also important that it’s not too complicated, preferably without drilling and minimal DIY work. Do you have any specific product recommendations?Well described, TAFUKAU. For your 4x4 KALLAX with back panel, flexible LED strips with mounting clips found as accessories are mainly suitable. I recommend paying attention to the following specifications:
- Operating voltage: 12V DC is safer and more compatible
- Brightness: approx. 300-600 lumens per meter
- Color temperature: CHOICE between warm white (2700-3000K) or RGB
- Control: remote control or Wi-Fi modules
Ready-made plug-and-play sets including power supply, remote control, and self-adhesive LED strip are available from providers like Govee or NZXT. Both also offer RGB options with app control. Installation is done using adhesive tape or optional brackets, which can also be purchased separately.

Which brands or products can you specifically recommend? I personally often recommend:- IKEA Ledberg (affordable, easy to install, fits well in KALLAX)
- Govee LED strips (sufficient length, many control options via app)
- Philips Hue Lightstrip Plus (a bit more expensive, but seamless integration, dimmable, and high-quality colors)
With Hue, you will need to cut it yourself a bit and possibly buy clips. The LEDBERG strips are quite stiff but perfect for inside shelves if you have enough power outlets. Important: Pay attention to the length of the LED strips and whether the controller is included.
