Gerofar6211 Sep 2015 09:27Hello everyone, I am currently planning to install lighting for my IKEA Metod kitchen and would like to do it myself. However, I am not entirely sure about the best way to connect and mount the lighting rail, especially regarding the wiring and installation inside the wall cabinets. Does anyone have specific tips for installing LED or light rails, which components I will need, and what electrical considerations I should keep in mind? Thanks in advance!
The installation of IKEA Metod kitchen lighting is generally quite manageable if you follow some basic guidelines:
- First, make sure the electrical circuit you want to connect the lighting to is switched off.
- The Metod series typically uses low-voltage LED lighting with a transformer, which must be integrated into the system.
- The fixtures are usually connected via plug-in connectors, making it easier to mount them flexibly under wall cabinets.
- Make sure to route the wiring so that cables are not kinked or pinched.
- For mounting, it is recommended to fix the rails using the included clips, which IKEA also provides.
Electrically, you should only use grounded plug connectors and consult a qualified electrician if you are unsure.

Great topic, Gerofar62! I also installed my Metod kitchen lighting myself and can only say it’s really fun 😊! My tips: Take your time with the planning, especially regarding where the cable routes will go. Make sure to attach the rails before installation; it saves a lot of hassle later. And if you want to use dimmable LEDs, buy a compatible dimmer at the same time. You can definitely do it – just be confident!

I did it myself and found the included plugs really convenient — this way, everything can be easily replaced or moved if needed. Bonus: the LEDs are energy-efficient and produce very little heat, so no worries about damage. If it helps, try tackling it step by step, and if you like, you can think of it like building with Lego bricks! 😉

The installation of the IKEA Metod kitchen lighting is basically manageable if you follow some basic rules: Thank you for the clear summary! I am particularly interested in how to connect the transformer properly, as IKEA offers different versions (1.5m (5 feet), 3m (10 feet) cables, etc.). Can I hide the transformer somewhere inside the cabinet without heat becoming an issue? Also, how exactly are the connectors designed – so far, I’ve only seen that they are flat connections, but I have no idea if they can be cut or shortened by myself.
Regarding the transformer and installation inside the cabinet: The heat generation is generally low, but the transformer should be placed in a well-ventilated area, as proper heat dissipation is important. A cabinet that is too small without air circulation could reduce the lifespan over time.
Accessibility is also a consideration: The transformer should remain reachable for maintenance or replacement.
Caution is advised regarding the connectors: IKEA provides special connectors for the LED strips, which are not designed for DIY cutting, as this could compromise safety and functionality. To achieve custom lengths, IKEA offers suitable extension cables and accessories.
