Hello everyone, I hope you can help me with a problem I’m having with my Ikea Brimnes shelving unit. For some time now, the unit has been noticeably wobbly, more than what would be expected from normal use. I have checked that all the screws are tightened properly, and the screw connections seem to be fine. The shelving unit stands on a level laminate floor with no unevenness. However, it seems like the wobbling is coming from the connection between the side panels and the shelves.

My question is: What measures would you recommend to permanently fix the wobbling? Are there any known weak points in the Brimnes shelving unit that one should be aware of? And is it worth using additional fasteners or would another solution be better to improve stability?

I look forward to your advice, as I want to stabilize the unit without major modifications.

The wobbling of an Ikea BRIMNES shelving unit usually occurs due to loosened fasteners or insufficient wall anchoring. My recommendations:

- Recheck the brackets and screws and tighten them if necessary, even if they appear to be secure.
- Make sure the back panel of the shelving unit is properly and fully fixed, as it plays a crucial role in stabilizing the furniture.
- If available, attach the shelving unit to the wall using the included brackets—these effectively prevent tipping and wobbling.
- For even stronger fixation, you can add additional brackets or small wooden strips behind the shelves to reinforce the connections.

These are proven methods I have personally used on more than one BRIMNES unit. Another tip: avoid excessive loading on individual shelves, as this can overstress the material.

If you can provide more details on the type of wobbling, I can offer more specific advice.

I would agree with that, but the question remains how durable the snap-fit or screw connections are over the long term for furniture in this price range. Ikea furniture is generally designed for moderate use, which also means accepting structural weaknesses under higher stress.

So, it is worth discussing whether the original design should be modified with additional reinforcements. This can certainly make sense, but it would compromise the modular nature and might require some concessions in terms of appearance.

An interesting approach could be to secure the shelf not just at specific points, but to distribute the load better—for example, by adding an extra wooden board at the bottom or using wider feet. Firmly retightening individual screws is a reasonable first step but may not address the fundamental material issue.

Does anyone have experience with how Ikea handles complaints about wobbling BRIMNES shelves? Especially for somewhat more expensive models, knowing about warranty coverage would be useful.

The back panel often isn’t secured tightly enough, which can cause wobbling. Always make sure to tighten the screws firmly. Attach it to the wall if possible.
