Hello everyone, I have some furniture from the Hemnes series by IKEA and would like to learn more about the proper care and cleaning of the surfaces. Most of the furniture is made of painted solid wood or MDF with a special coating, and I have read that not every cleaning method is suitable. Does anyone have proven tips or recommendations on which cleaning products to use, how often the surfaces should be cleaned, and what approaches are best for maintaining their appearance in the long term? Also, advice on common mistakes to avoid would be very helpful. Thanks in advance for your expertise!

Hello pejavier, caring for IKEA Hemnes surfaces does require a careful approach, as especially the lacquered solid wood and MDF can be sensitive to improper cleaning methods. In general, I recommend the following procedure: - Use a microfiber cloth that is slightly dampened to remove dust and light surface dirt. - For occasional cleaning, use lukewarm water combined with a mild, neutral cleaning agent, such as a pH-neutral dishwashing detergent. - Avoid aggressive cleaners, abrasive substances, or alcohol-based products, as these can damage the finish and cause fading or even softening of the lacquer. - After cleaning, wipe the surface with a dry cloth to prevent water spots. An important point is also to protect the furniture from direct sunlight and high humidity, as these can additionally stress the surfaces.

Are there any specific conditions where the furniture is heavily used, for example in the kitchen or living room? That would help to provide more precise advice.

I think these general care instructions make sense, but it’s also important to consider how durable the surfaces of Hemnes really are. There are reports that after just a few years, the paint starts to chip or develop cracks. In my opinion, it’s worth thinking about whether these products are really the best choice for high-use areas like dining tables.

I completely agree with this, but I would add: Even mild cleaners can affect the finish over time if they are not wiped off immediately. Therefore, preventive care, such as regular dusting without using moisture in heavily used areas, might be more effective than frequent cleaning with water.

What are your experiences with long-term maintenance?

Additional information: The Hemnes series typically features a white lacquer finish on coated MDF or lacquered solid wood. This finish is not as durable as PU (polyurethane) or melamine coatings.

Key points from my perspective:
- Avoid standing water and direct moisture.
- Avoid exposure to heat, including placing hot pots directly without a trivet or coaster.
- Cleaning products should be free of solvents.

I often use pure Japanese rice paper (a damp cloth) for gentle cleaning of my Hemnes furniture. Additionally, I always keep coasters near my Hemnes dining tables to prevent discoloration and scratches.

A leaky window can quickly cause moisture damage, so it should be checked regularly. Overall, I recommend regular maintenance to remove dirt early and avoid stubborn residues.

Do not use aggressive agents. Only wipe with a damp cloth and then dry immediately. Do not scrub. Treat stains immediately.

Hello pejavier, I have been maintaining my Hemnes furniture for years using the following methods: 1. Daily dusting with a dry microfiber cloth. 2. Monthly wiping with a damp cloth and diluted mild dish soap. 3. Immediate removal of liquids or stains to prevent edge damage. I also think it’s important to treat the furniture gently and avoid placing sharp objects directly on it.

By the way, I have found that furniture care products based on wax or oil are less suitable for Hemnes because they can leave residues that are difficult to clean and look dirty.

How often and in which rooms do you have your Hemnes furniture? That can also affect the care needed.
