Hello everyone, I am currently working on modifying Ikea Platsa furniture for my living room and would like to use this project to add more color to the furniture. My question is: How can I effectively redesign Ikea Platsa units to make them more vibrant and personalized in terms of color, without compromising the functionality and stability of the modules? I am particularly interested in recommendations regarding materials, finishing techniques, and design options that are not too complicated but still achieve a lasting color effect. Has anyone had experience with painting, applying adhesive coverings, or other coloring methods on Platsa? I look forward to your practical tips and advice!

Hey KEOCHEN, I really like your idea of adding more color to Ikea Platsa – it’s super inspiring! I recently covered the fronts myself with self-adhesive vinyl in bright colors, and the result is a real eye-catcher!!! Of course, you have to be very careful to avoid air bubbles, but it’s totally worth it! And if you ever get tired of the vinyl, you can peel it off cleanly and redo it. A little tip from me: use a squeegee and make sure to thoroughly clean the surface beforehand. When spray painting, I’d also recommend applying at least three thin coats, so the color really pops and lasts long. So don’t be discouraged – just go for it and add some color! You got this!

I am skeptical about whether such films are truly suitable for long-term durability. Usually, the adhesive does not bond equally well to all surfaces, and after some time you can see edges or wrinkles. Also, how does the film react to temperature changes or humidity? This can be particularly problematic for furniture in living areas. A specific long-term test would be interesting here. Additionally, regarding painting, I would note that melamine foil is usually very smooth and therefore requires a special primer to prevent chipping.

Thank you all for the many detailed and well-founded responses! The advice on surface preparation (sanding, priming) and the different painting methods is especially helpful to me. Your personal experiences with chalk paint, spray paint, and self-adhesive film also help me better weigh the options. I take the concerns about durability and longevity of films seriously – I will likely test them first on a few individual fronts. I am also intrigued by the tips on the color scheme using recessed handles as an accent, and I will definitely consider that. Is there anyone else with practical experience in color replacement of panel fronts in the Platsa system? I definitely don’t want to limit functionality and hope there are proven solutions or advice on compatible replacement parts. Thanks again, and I look forward to more tips!
