Hello everyone,
I am planning to assemble an IKEA Hemnes wardrobe soon, but I don’t yet have all the necessary tools ready. Could someone please tell me exactly which tools are typically required for this type of assembly?
I have built several IKEA furniture pieces before, but the Hemnes series seems a bit more robust and complex in construction than, for example, the Kallax shelf. I want to make sure I have everything needed — from screwdrivers to possibly special bits or other accessories.
Any advice on whether it’s better to screw manually or use a power tool, and which tools are essential to have at home to avoid issues during assembly, would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your tips!

Hello,
here is a brief list of the essential tools for assembling the Hemnes:
- Phillips screwdriver (PH2) – usually for the large screws
- Allen key (often included, but personal sets are often higher quality)
- Cordless drill with the appropriate bit – recommended for faster assembly
- Rubber mallet – for gently tapping in dowels or wood plugs
A tip: Do not use too high torque settings on the cordless drill, as this can damage the material. If you don’t have a cordless drill, that’s not a big problem, but using the correct bit makes the process much easier.
If wooden dowels need to be inserted, a rubber mallet is essential to avoid damaging the material. Good luck!

I would like to add that it is important to read the instructions carefully, as sometimes special screws are supplied that require, for example, specialty bits. However, with IKEA Hemnes, this is usually standard.
Whether to use a cordless drill depends on your personal experience. Beginners can sometimes drive the screws too deep. My tip: first carefully screw them in by hand, then tighten them with a bit of power.
Additionally, it is helpful to sort all screws and individual parts before starting, as this makes it easier to keep an overview.

To take a closer look at the tools needed for assembling Hemnes furniture from my technical perspective: Hemnes furniture is mainly made from solid pine wood, which requires a somewhat sturdier approach compared to similar particleboard furniture.
- Screwdriver: As mentioned, a PH2 Phillips head is the most important, since almost all screws use this type. I recommend an ergonomic handle for extended use.
- Cordless drill/driver: Useful, but make sure it has adjustable torque, ideally 3-5 Nm (2.2-3.7 ft-lb) for driving screws, so the wood does not splinter or the screws don’t damage the material.
- Bits: If you prefer to work electrically, have a good-quality bit set with Phillips PH2, PH1, and possibly Torx bits—some IKEA cabinets use screws with Torx heads.
- Rubber mallet: As already mentioned, strongly recommended for fitting wooden dowels to avoid damaging the material.
- Square or angle guide: Handy to align parts at right angles if precise assembly is desired.
- Since Hemnes wood is relatively thick, pre-drilling is generally not necessary as the screws are well-matched to the material. Still, avoid driving screws with full force right away.
For assembly:
I recommend unpacking the parts and sorting them out on the floor. Use protective sheets to prevent scratches.
One technical note: Hemnes often uses a so-called Minifix connector, which combines a dowel with a rotary locking connection. For this, you usually need the supplied slot driver tool or you can easily use a standard screwdriver to assist.
Question: What tools do you already have at home, or are you planning to get anything special for this?

Question then: What tools do you already have at home, or would you like to get some specifically for this?Thank you for the detailed response! I have a decent cordless drill with adjustable torque settings and a small selection of Phillips and flathead bits. I also own a rubber mallet as well as some Allen wrenches, though only in very basic versions.
My goal is to have everything ready without having to buy anything else unless absolutely necessary. Otherwise, I will of course purchase additional tools as needed.
It would be helpful to know if the Allen wrench set included by IKEA is really sufficient or if I should invest in higher quality ones. Also, is it strongly recommended to use a power tool like a cordless drill for assembling the Hemnes, or is it better to stick with manual screwing?
