Hello everyone,

I am planning to install an Ikea Metod kitchen soon and am currently considering how to securely attach the kitchen cabinets to different wall types. Specifically, I am interested in:

- Which types of wall plugs and screws are recommended depending on the wall material (e.g., concrete, brick, drywall, wood paneling)?
- Are there any special installation tips for walls with unusual compositions, such as drywall with insulation behind it, or clinker brick?
- What minimum distances and load limits should be observed when mounting the Metod wall cabinets?

I want to avoid the cabinets loosening over time or damaging the mounting. If anyone has experience or guidance, I would be very grateful. Thanks in advance!

Hello Macariojan,

your question addresses the core of safe kitchen installation. Here is a brief overview of how to fix Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets to different wall types:

- Concrete walls: Heavy-duty anchors (e.g., expansion anchors or bolt anchors) are best. Make sure to drill to an adequate depth (at least 70 mm) and avoid using simple plastic anchors for heavy kitchen units.

- Brick walls: Nylon or long-shaft anchors also work well here, preferably in larger sizes (8 mm or more) to distribute the load.

- Drywall (plasterboard): Exercise caution, as standard anchors are not sufficient. Use special cavity anchors or metal expansion anchors designed for heavy loads. Alternatively, screw directly into the wooden studs if possible.

- Wood paneling: Screw directly into the wooden framework, otherwise use standard wood screws.

Tips:
- Always use a spirit level when mounting the support rail to ensure the cabinets hang straight.
- Maintain a minimum gap of 40–50 mm (1.5–2 inches) from adjacent furniture for expansion and proper ventilation.
- Check if the wall is load-bearing—especially with suspended ceilings or cladded walls.

If you plan to install on special walls like clinker brick, similar rules apply as with brick, but drilling is more challenging; here, SDS drill bits are recommended.

I hope this helps as a starting point!

That might be the best solution for many, but I think it is often overrated. Many people simply use basic plastic anchors in drywall and are surprised when something eventually falls down – of course, that is bad. But honestly: how often do wall cabinets actually carry the full weight? The load is usually distributed across several points.

I advocate approaching this more pragmatically and not fearing drywall fastenings too much, as long as you’re not filling every drawer with lead.

Of course, for maximum safety it’s better to screw into metal studs, no doubt. But who says you always need the heaviest-duty option? Sometimes a good nylon hollow wall anchor is enough. More elegant and faster, at least from my point of view.

Basically, I agree with that. However, it is important to accurately assess the tensile and shear forces at the fastening point.

I have mounted Metod cabinets on drywall using suitable hollow wall anchors (preferably metal) several times, and this combination has held perfectly for years. Problems usually arise only when too few fasteners are used or the cabinets are overloaded.

Regarding drywall with insulation: you need to be careful when drilling to avoid damaging the insulation and losing the anchor’s grip. It helps to locate metal studs beforehand using a strong magnet or a stud finder.

I recommend using at least four screws per cabinet for lighter units and possibly more for wall cabinets wider than 60cm (24 inches). The Ikea Metod mounting rails should always be fixed with wall anchors—never screwed directly into the drywall panels.

If someone has a wall with timber studs, that is obviously optimal—direct screwing into the studs provides the highest security.

I hope this helps!

To add some technical details regarding load and fastening that are often overlooked:

- Every fastener has a defined maximum tensile and shear load. You can find this information either in the manufacturer’s specifications for the anchors or in technical datasheets. For an Ikea Metod kitchen, you should compare these values with the weight of the cabinets.

- The weight of a Metod wall cabinet including its contents can easily reach 30 to 40 kg (66 to 88 lbs). This means that each individual screw and its anchor must hold at least 10 kg (22 lbs) per fastening point, preferably more for safety.

- For drywall panels, it is recommended to mount onto the underlying wooden or metal studs. If these are not available, special cavity anchors (e.g., toggle bolts, metal construction screws) are required.

- For brick walls, it is advisable to use a hammer drill and long-shank anchors of sufficient length (at least 50 mm (2 inches) anchor embedded in the wall).

- Exception: For freestanding walls or non-load-bearing walls, you should consult a structural engineer or professional to determine if additional reinforcement is necessary.

Additionally, it is important to install the mounting rails of the Metod series correctly, as they distribute the load across multiple points and ensure a secure hold.

This is a very important point that many underestimate. I would also add that a stud finder is not only useful for locating metal studs but also for detecting electrical cables or water pipes before drilling.

Additionally, it is advisable to use anchors and screws with the appropriate diameter and length. For Metod wall cabinets, I recommend screws with at least a 5mm (0.2 inch) diameter and anchors between 60 and 80mm (2.4 and 3.1 inches) long. This increases load capacity and ensures long-term stability.

Another tip: before final tightening, carefully level the mounting rail using a spirit level. This prevents tilting or tension issues later on.

In short: safety and precision are essential here.
