Hello everyone,

I have some IKEA Malm furniture at home, mainly dressers and nightstands, and I would like to enhance their appearance because the standard look has become a bit plain and boring over time. I’m not looking for major modifications but rather practical and aesthetically pleasing ways to make Malm furniture appear more unique and high-quality. Maybe through surface treatments, changing the handle design, or adding small decorative elements?

What experiences have you had, and which methods work best to give typical Malm furniture more personality and style? Are there any tips that can be easily done without much effort? I look forward to your suggestions!

I totally understand you—I had the same issue with my Malm dresser feeling a bit too sterile. What I tried was swapping out the handles. There are many nice handles available in metal or wood that you can easily install with a screwdriver. That already makes a big difference because the original look doesn’t feel so standard anymore.

I also treated the surfaces with matte furniture oil. It gives the wood a nicer texture and a warmer tone. It’s not a complicated process but made a big impact for me.

How much time and effort are you thinking of putting into it? You can always do it gradually :-)

If you want to improve the surface, use adhesive film or paint to cover it. Add new handles – done. Quick and effective.

This is really a good and simple step. Additionally, you might consider repainting the drawer fronts with washable paint or covering them with special adhesive films in wood grain or other patterns. This adds a lot more personality to your furniture.

Important: Before painting or applying the films, clean the surface thoroughly and lightly sand it to improve durability and results. Spend a few evenings on this, and you’ll have a true one-of-a-kind piece.

Sometimes I also use small decorative elements or stickers, but that’s a matter of personal taste.

Hello annateo,

Regarding visually enhancing Malm furniture, there are quite a few technical and practical tips that vary in usefulness depending on your expectations. Here are some detailed suggestions:

1. Surface Preparation: Malm furniture is usually made from laminated particleboard. To ensure that paint or new laminate adheres well and lasts, I recommend sanding the surface first—start with 180 grit and finish with 220 grit sandpaper. Then wipe off the dust with a clean, dry cloth.

2. Paint Application: Water-based acrylic paints work well as they have low odor and good adhesion. Alternatively, stains containing beeswax create a warm wood look.

3. Replacing Handles: It’s best to use handles with standard screw sizes so you don’t have to fill old holes. For unusual handles, you can use cover plates or filler panels to hide previous drill holes.

4. Edges: For drawer edges, applying edge banding in wood or metal look can give the furniture a more high-quality appearance.

5. Protection: After painting, a clear acrylic varnish is recommended for increased durability.

6. Personalization: For a special touch, consider covering shelves with wallpaper backing or fabric—it’s hidden inside but creates an appealing effect when opened.

What does your schedule and tool availability look like? Do you have experience with sanding or painting furniture? Then I could provide more targeted advice.

Replace handles and apply a new finish with spray paint. Dries quickly and adheres well. Work in a dust-free environment only.
