What I tried was swapping out the handles. There are many nice handles available in metal or wood that you can easily install with a screwdriver. That already makes a big difference because the original look doesn’t feel so standard anymore.
I also treated the surfaces with matte furniture oil. It gives the wood a nicer texture and a warmer tone. It’s not a complicated process but made a big impact for me.
How much time and effort are you thinking of putting into it? You can always do it gradually :-)
