Hello everyone, I am currently facing the problem of setting up several Malm furniture pieces from IKEA in my apartment, but because the floor is very uneven, assembling and especially stabilizing the furniture is quite challenging. My question is: How can I safely and permanently install or level Malm furniture when the floor is not even? What techniques or tools do you recommend to compensate for unevenness and ensure stability? I would appreciate practical tips and experiences from similar situations!

You should definitely use adjustable furniture feet. IKEA offers these separately, or you can find them at hardware stores. This allows you to compensate for minor unevenness. It is important to level the entire piece of furniture horizontally using the feet.

Hello! When dealing with uneven flooring, it is really essential to first measure the actual slope angle, for example with a spirit level or a small laser device. Then you can use adjustable furniture feet or spacers to compensate for the unevenness. Some also recommend securing the furniture to the wall, which additionally increases stability. If the floor is particularly uneven, small washers or wooden shims placed under the feet can also help. This way, you can avoid wobbling and distribute the load on the furniture evenly.

One additional tip: If the floor is very uneven, it is advisable to clean the floor and check whether you should level out any larger bumps or depressions before assembling the furniture. Small irregularities can often be compensated by using furniture glides combined with felt pads, which also protect the floor from scratches. It is also important to properly adjust the furniture feet during initial setup and then check them several times afterward to prevent long-term wobbling.

Hi, great topic!!! 🙂 Personally, I have always had good experiences with self-adhesive foam rubber strips under the bottoms of furniture on uneven floors. They are flexible, can effectively compensate for irregularities, and completely prevent wobbling! They are also inexpensive and easy to install. Give it a try – it’s really amazing how stable the furniture stands afterward!!!

I want to go a bit deeper into this topic, as the issue of uneven floors is often underestimated and simple solutions are not always enough. First, it is important to precisely determine the extent of the unevenness. A laser level or at least a longer spirit level is very helpful here. For Malm furniture, which usually does not have built-in adjustable feet due to its design, you should check whether it is possible to retrofit special adjustable feet. These are typically mounted as screw feet directly under the furniture legs and allow for millimeter-precise adjustments. Additionally, I recommend securing the furniture to the wall using IKEA safety fittings to minimize the risk of tipping. In some cases, especially with very uneven floorboards, it may be advisable to level the floor with a two-component leveling compound before installation. If that is not an option, you can also use wooden or plastic shims, which you can cut to size and then paint or seal to prevent swelling or dirt absorption. Finally, a tip: after assembling the furniture, check the weight distribution with a small spirit level test and regularly monitor whether the adjustment changes under load, especially with frequently used drawers.
