Hello everyone, I recently purchased some IKEA Hemnes furniture, including a bed and a wardrobe. However, I have little experience with assembling furniture and want to avoid having wobbly or unstable pieces – especially since the Hemnes range seems somewhat more challenging due to its wooden material and construction compared to simpler shelving units.
My specific question is: How can I assemble IKEA Hemnes furniture securely without much experience? I am particularly interested in tips on mechanical stability (screws, brackets, connections) as well as advice on handling common issues like misaligned parts or inaccurate holes. Are there any tools that are especially useful, and what should I pay particular attention to so the furniture stands safely and lasts a long time?
I look forward to your experiences and detailed advice!

Wow, great tips so far! Really helpful for anyone who doesn’t build furniture very often.
I’d like to add: Don’t panic if a screw is a bit difficult to turn – stay calm and avoid using force. It’s better to take a step back and realign everything correctly.
And: Look forward to the result! Hemnes furniture is really sturdy when assembled properly. I was a bit worried at first too, but now my bed is as solid as a rock!
And very important: occasionally move the furniture gently back and forth during assembly to feel if anything is loose. This way, you can make adjustments early on.

Hello Trapu, I completely understand your concerns. As someone who also often had little experience, I can offer you three practical tips:
- Use wood glue for the dowel joints. This provides better strength, especially when the dowels don’t fit perfectly.
- Make sure to tighten all screws by hand first, loosely assemble all parts, and only fully tighten them at the end with a cordless drill or screwdriver. This way you avoid putting stress on the wood.
- Prepare a stable surface for assembly, preferably a large blanket or old carpet pieces, to prevent small scratches on the wood and ensure the components lie flat.
If you notice that a screw won’t hold, you can bridge it with a small piece of wood as a spacer – flat-pack furniture isn’t always perfectly pre-drilled, so sometimes you have to improvise.
If you want, feel free to update us on how far you’ve gotten!

I had suspected that the pre-drilled holes might sometimes be slightly off or too soft.
I also wanted to ask: How about the load over time? Is it possible to adjust the furniture after assembly, like tightening screws again, or should everything be tightened as much as possible from the start? I’m worried that repeatedly tightening might cause damage later on.

In general, it is normal, especially with wooden furniture, for screws and joints to loosen over time because wood expands or contracts depending on humidity. For this reason, good furniture maintenance includes checking the screws again after a few weeks and tightening them slightly if necessary.
However: Never overtighten! Not even when retightening. It’s best to tighten just enough so that the joint feels stable without squeezing or cracking the wood.
If you feel unsure when retightening, you can set the torque on your power screwdriver to a low level beforehand or tighten slowly by hand. Over-tightening often causes tears or damaged parts.
Also, a small tip: Use self-locking screws or thread lockers (for example, wings applied with a drop) only if you are experienced with the material to avoid jamming or breakage.
Long-term stability is achieved more through moderate, controlled tightening and regular checks than by tightening everything very firmly just once.
Great thread here! I just want to add: when assembling, always stay relaxed and take it step by step, don’t rush – IKEA furniture usually comes with simple instructions, which is really a blessing.
Exactly! And if you ever have doubts, just take a short break – a fresh mind often helps 😊
