Hello everyone,

I recently bought some IKEA Brimnes furniture, mainly wardrobes and dressers, and have now noticed that in some areas they are unfortunately not as stable as I expected. Especially with the larger wardrobes, there is a slight wobble that could probably get worse over time.

Therefore, I wanted to ask here in the forum: Are there any tips to make IKEA Brimnes furniture more stable? I would appreciate advice that covers both assembly and possible modifications or additions. It is important for me to find solutions that can be implemented easily – I don’t want to completely rebuild the furniture, but rather improve stability in a simple way.

Has anyone here had experience with Brimnes furniture and can share helpful tips? Thanks in advance!

Hello Ulrike,

I have a lot of experience with IKEA furniture, including the Brimnes series, and I can share some proven tips to make it more stable.

When assembling, be sure to pay attention to the following points:
- Tighten all screws and connectors properly, but avoid overtightening, as this can damage the material.
- Make sure the back panels are attached fully and tightly, as they contribute significantly to the overall stability.

An additional tip:
- Use small angle brackets (metal corner braces), which you can find at hardware stores, at the junctions between the main body and the back panel. These can noticeably reinforce the structure.

Also useful:
- If the furniture can be attached to the wall (which is usually the case with Brimnes), be sure to use the included wall brackets. This prevents wobbling and greatly increases safety.

Finally, a note: Some users add self-adhesive felt pads to the bottom plates if the floor is uneven – this prevents the furniture from tipping and keeps it level.

Summary:
- Tighten screws properly
- Secure back panels optimally
- Add angle brackets
- Use wall attachments
- Use felt pads against floor unevenness

If you have specific areas that are especially wobbly, feel free to describe them in detail, and I can give you more targeted advice.

Basically, Brimnes furniture is solid for the price, but stability can sometimes be limited with larger cabinets.

I recommend:
- Checking the fastening points: Often the supplied connectors are sufficient, but improvements with stronger screws or additional dowels can help.
- Reinforcing the back panel: The back panels are usually made of thin cardboard. Replacing or reinforcing them with a thin plywood sheet can significantly increase structural strength.
- Wall mounting: Brimnes furniture is primarily designed to be attached to the wall. Omitting this element negatively affects stability and should be avoided.

Also, ensure even distribution of weight on the shelves and avoid overloading to prevent deformation.

These points will provide maximum stability considering the type of furniture.

I agree with this. A simple and effective method is to attach such small metal corner braces to the inside corners of the cabinet. Additionally, I reinforced the back panel with some wood glue along the edges before screwing it in place.

Another often underestimated point is correctly aligning the components during assembly. Once everything is properly squared, screws and dowels can be tightened much more securely, resulting in more stable furniture.

I did this with one of my cabinets as well. The plywood panel doesn’t cost much and really makes a difference in stability. However, you have to be careful to ensure the drill holes still align properly.

Finally, a tip: if you have children or pets, it is really important to secure the furniture to the wall. Especially with Brimnes cabinets, instability can be dangerous.
