Hello everyone,

I have noticed that the doors of my KALLAX shelving unit warp due to temperature fluctuations. This mainly happens when the room temperature varies significantly, for example between the heating season and warmer days. The doors then do not close properly or do not sit flush anymore. Since I know that MDF and particleboard react to environmental changes, I am wondering how to best compensate for this effect. Are there any tips or materials that help minimize the warping, or do I have to expect some degree of distortion and simply readjust more often? I want to approach this professionally, so no quick fixes. Perhaps someone has experience or advice on how to address this issue permanently and in a way that is gentle on the material. Thanks in advance!

The best method is not to fix the doors completely. Use hinges with adjustment features so you can realign them if they warp. Wooden doors naturally respond to humidity and temperature – you need to take this into account.

Hello Hamza,

Your issue is actually common with KALLAX doors, especially because the MDF panels are thinner and quite sensitive to temperature and humidity changes.

What can help is, first, using hinges with adjustment options, as has already been mentioned here. It is also important that the doors are positioned so they are not right next to radiators or in areas that are too humid.

Second, you can try treating the doors from the inside with weather-resistant paint or a special sealant. This measure reduces moisture penetration and slightly decreases warping. Be sure to check the product information to confirm that the paint is suitable for MDF.

Third, I think it is sensible to keep the rooms at a fairly constant temperature and avoid strong fluctuations, if possible.

This is very helpful in practice because it makes adjustment easier.

I hope this helps you!

Hi Hamza!

I had the exact same problem with my KALLAX doors – it’s really frustrating when the doors suddenly become misaligned. 🙂

What helped me a lot was painting the doors with a thin, clear acrylic or clear varnish, both inside and outside. This minimizes moisture absorption and significantly reduces warping! Patience is key here when applying and allowing the coats to dry properly in between.

And very important: adjustable hinges are fantastic! They allow you to realign the doors whenever things get a bit off. 🙂

Absolutely! Definitely give it a try—it’s totally worth it. I hope it works out for you too! 🙂

So, I think the entire discussion actually shows how much IKEA improvised with the doors for KALLAX. If you want serious stability, you shouldn’t rely on thin MDF—it’s basically plastic-coated cardboard with paint.

That’s exactly the point: having to readjust repeatedly is a fact. But the more important question is whether you really want to solve the problem with small repairs or if it’s better to invest in sturdier doors made from more solid material.

I see a lot of design and material compromises at IKEA. Of course, you can still paint the doors or add durable protective coatings, but that doesn’t change the original problem of thin panels and the stresses caused by temperature fluctuations.

If it really bothered me, I would consider replacing the doors rather than constantly adjusting them.
