Hello everyone,

I have a problem with one of the drawers in my IKEA KALLAX shelving unit: it is practically falling apart. The joint between the side panels is coming apart completely, making the drawer unusable. Of course, I don’t want to buy a completely new drawer and am wondering if there are ways to get replacement parts or at least complete replacement drawers directly — maybe even third-party reproductions?

Has anyone had experience with where to get such replacement parts or advice on the best approach when a KALLAX drawer is no longer stable? Perhaps someone also knows alternative solutions for repairing the drawer without replacing the entire unit?

I would be very grateful for any tips, contacts, or personal experiences!

Regarding replacement parts for KALLAX drawers: IKEA does not officially offer individual replacement parts for the drawers, only complete modules or the entire shelving unit. What often works is contacting customer service, as they sometimes provide goodwill solutions, especially if the purchase was made recently.

As an alternative, you can look for used drawers through specialized furniture spare parts suppliers or online marketplaces like eBay Classifieds. The KALLAX drawer is typically made of MDF panels and plastic connectors, so repairing it with wood glue and possibly additional screws can also be a practical option.

Another possibility is 3D printing replacement connector pieces if you are technically skilled and have access to the appropriate files. Essentially, a more durable repair can be done by replacing or reinforcing the broken connecting parts yourself.

Exactly, replacements are only available as complete units.

I would call them directly.

Screws and wood glue often help with loose joints.

Hey, I had the same problem with my KALLAX drawer last year. The side joint was broken, and I fixed it quickly with wood glue and a few small screws. It’s been working great since then and holds surprisingly well 🙂

If you’re somewhat handy, the effort is worth it. Otherwise, I’d suggest checking with IKEA, but as mentioned before, they usually only offer the complete replacement unit.

A good tip is to prepare the damaged edges with some sandpaper so the glue adheres better. If the plastic connectors are broken, you can also reinforce them with suitable wooden strips, in case you want to try that.

From my experience, the best and most sustainable solution for a damaged KALLAX drawer is an on-site repair using commonly available materials. The drawers are made of relatively thin MDF, which often gives way at the joints under load.

If the issue is failure at the dowels or connecting clips, it is advisable to reglue the joint holes and replace the dowels if necessary. Replacement dowels are easy to find at hardware stores or online. Additionally, you can check with woodworking professionals or custom furniture makers to see if reproductions or individual components can be ordered.

Contacting IKEA is worth trying, but the chances of obtaining individual replacement parts are low. Alternatively, I can provide a detailed repair guide upon request to help extend the lifespan of the drawer.
