ᐅ Kallax doors can no longer be adjusted after renovation – has anyone experienced this?

Hello everyone,
After renovating, I noticed that the doors on my Kallax shelf no longer adjust properly. The hinges don’t seem to work as they did before, which is closely related to the alignment. I’m wondering if others have experienced this issue: Who knows the problem of Kallax doors suddenly not being adjustable correctly after a renovation or move? What could be the causes, and are there effective tips for getting the doors properly aligned again? I am especially interested in whether there is a specific order for making the adjustments or if the material might have been damaged by the renovation work.

In my case, the problem was that the walls and floor are slightly uneven, causing the entire Kallax shelving unit to tilt just a little. I removed the doors individually, completely dismantled the hinges, and with some careful handling and small shims, I made some adjustments. It worked out really well! Thanks for your question—I thought I was the only one with this problem! 🙂

Is it really the hinge or more likely an incorrect installation after the renovation? That is certainly possible, but in most cases it is actually due to changes in the surrounding geometry.
A thorough analysis of the conditions is essential. This means measuring the squareness and flatness of the floor and adjoining walls, as well as checking any warping of the Kallax unit itself.
The hinge typically offers the following adjustment options:
- Horizontal shift (side to side) approx. 3–4 mm (0.1–0.15 inches)
- Vertical adjustment possible by means of mounting screws
- Depth (clamping pressure) adjusted via the cover flap
If the warping or unevenness exceeds these values, adjustment is no longer possible.
It is also worth mentioning that renovations often cause increased moisture or heat exposure, which can slightly deform materials.
In short: realign hinges and fastenings, plus carefully check the surrounding conditions!
Hello Molegla,
I can fully understand your situation and would be happy to offer some help.
First of all: The Kallax door hinge is a so-called clip hinge with three adjustment axes – horizontal, vertical, and depth. Especially after renovation work, it can happen that the frame or walls have slightly warped. This, in turn, affects the door position.
The following steps might help:
1. Remove the doors – to do this, press the clips on the hinge.
2. Loosen the hinges on the cabinet to allow space for adjustments.
3. Use a spirit level on the door and cabinet to check for height differences or angular deviations.
4. Then loosen the screws in the correct order and horizontally adjust the door – usually, two screws are responsible for horizontal movement.
5. Vertical alignment can often be achieved by repositioning the hinge on the cabinet.
If an optimal alignment is still not possible, wooden wedges or small spacers on the back of the cabinet might help to compensate for minor tilting.
I hope this helps! If you provide more detailed information about your situation, I can make the advice even more precise.

If the warp or unevenness exceeds these measurements, adjustment is no longer possible.Exactly! That’s where the Kallax magic unfortunately ends. I think this is rarely discussed openly. Many immediately suggest "more screws," "more attempts," or "replacing the hinges" when facing such problems—completely ignoring the physical limits.
Renovation sometimes means that the furniture no longer fits perfectly. In these cases, you have to look for alternative solutions or accept that it won’t be a perfect, tight fit anymore.

Could you please describe in more detail how you adjust the settings and how the doors are currently hanging?Thank you for the detailed advice! I have actually tried adjusting the hinge screws multiple times in every direction. The vertical gaps between the doors and the floor are neither even nor parallel. On one side, the cabinet frame seems to be slightly crooked, which I will check again more precisely with a spirit level.
So far, I have left the doors attached to the cabinet and only loosened, adjusted, and retightened the screws on the hinges.
The doors do close, but there is still an uneven gap, as if they are hanging on one corner.
Could it be that I need to remove the doors completely first in order to make proper adjustments? Or should the cabinet frame possibly be aligned before adjusting the doors?
I appreciate your further insights!

Is it possible that I need to remove the doors completely before making proper adjustments?Yes, I highly recommend taking the doors off before any thorough adjustment. This way, you can more easily loosen and reposition the hinges on the cabinet if necessary. Adjusting the doors while they are still attached is fiddly and often not precise enough.
Also, be sure to check the position and level of the cabinet itself. If the frame of your Kallax shelf isn’t set up perfectly square, it will distort any door adjustments. A spirit level or a small straightedge can be very helpful for this.
If the frame isn’t level, you can try placing small shims under the cabinet to optimize its position before working on the doors.
It takes a bit of patience, but if you proceed step by step, you’ll get the doors nicely adjusted again! 🙂
