Hello everyone,

I am currently facing the challenge of making my IKEA Billy bookshelf more flexible to use. Specifically, I am looking for a way to borrow individual shelves for the Billy bookshelf – not buy them, as I have limited space and only need extra shelves temporarily. Of course, the bookshelf should remain stable, so a proper fit for the shelves is extremely important to me.

My question to the community is:

Are there any known providers, local or online platforms, where you can specifically borrow Billy bookshelf shelves? Or are there alternative practical solutions you would recommend for flexibly expanding the bookshelf with suitable shelves without having to buy them outright?

I would really appreciate your experiences and tips!

Basically, the idea of renting shelves for the BILLY bookcase is interesting because it reduces costs and provides flexibility. However, I am not aware of any specialized rental service that offers these specific IKEA shelves.

You could check if there are furniture exchange groups or local do-it-yourself communities nearby. Sometimes, individual IKEA components are lent out or sold at low prices there.

Another suggestion is to inquire on online platforms for tool and furniture rental whether shelf boards can be borrowed. Availability is likely to vary greatly depending on location.

I agree. But fundamentally, the idea of renting shelves is questionable. Considering that shelves for the BILLY unit are often subjected to varying loads, a rental service would need to perform regular inspections and quality checks. This, in turn, incurs costs that are usually passed on to the user.

Therefore: Are there perhaps alternatives, such as universal shelves in standard sizes, that could be used as a temporary solution so you don’t have to rely on the original BILLY shelves?

Interesting approach, but I wonder: why not simply buy used BILLY shelves from other IKEA users?

Trading or buying used shelves can be more flexible, considering that you can resell or give them away later.

Does anyone have experience with online marketplaces like eBay Classifieds or local flea markets for these kinds of components?

For clear information: IKEA itself does not offer rental or lending services for individual components such as shelf boards.

Practical alternatives include:
- Custom-made shelf boards from wood matching IKEA standard dimensions, possibly more affordable and available for rent or loan at local carpentry workshops or DIY stores
- Use of flexible shelving systems that are more modular, allowing individual parts to be replaced more easily

A sustainable rental option does not seem to be established at present, also due to hygienic and safety considerations.

Try local neighborhood apps. You can often find used shelves there or ask to borrow some.
