Hello everyone,

I recently started a larger kitchen project using Ikea Metod and unfortunately noticed several assembly defects that affect both stability and appearance. Particularly frustrating are misalignments in the cabinet units and damaged drill holes, which seem to be due to manufacturing errors or transport issues.

My question is: What is the best way to handle these kinds of assembly defects? What steps should be taken to ensure a repair or replacement? I am also interested in your experiences with Ikea customer service, especially regarding Metod. Is it worth hoping for a goodwill gesture, or is it better to insist on a formal claim?

I look forward to your answers and tips on how to resolve such problems with as little stress as possible, as the kitchen is quite a significant investment that should last for the long term.

Document defects immediately, take photos, and report them to Ikea. Usually, they replace the parts without any issues. Stay calm and provide a detailed description.

Double-check whether there are actually any defects. Sometimes it is due to incorrect installation. In case of genuine damage, contact Ikea to request replacement parts.

Measure again to confirm whether defects really exist.

That’s a valid point. Not every apparent defect is necessarily an installation error. Have you checked whether all parts fully comply with the instructions, or if the issues might be due to imprecise assembly? If there are manufacturing defects, the manufacturer should take responsibility. However, the process for claiming goodwill compensation is often communicated unclearly. Have you requested a written response from customer service to clarify exactly how they intend to proceed in your case?

Thank you for the comment, I have of course checked. There are several assembly components that either have pre-drilled holes with cracks or hinges that do not hold properly due to misaligned drilling. Also, some connectors do not fit together cleanly from a mechanical standpoint. I am convinced that these are production defects rather than assembly inaccuracies.

My concern is that Ikea might dismiss the claim because it is often handled as a goodwill gesture. Therefore, it would be helpful to know how others proceed in such cases, especially regarding quality assurance and documentation for claiming.

Hello Preston,

Your approach sounds very structured. I had similar issues with Metod cabinet elements myself and can recommend the following steps:

- Immediately document and photograph any defects carefully when unpacking and assembling.
- Report the case to the customer service of the IKEA store, preferably with all photos.
- It is important to remain clear and factual, explaining that the defects were neither caused by assembly errors nor improper handling.
- IKEA usually replaces faulty components, and sometimes the entire item can be exchanged directly in the store.
- If you receive any written confirmation or goodwill agreement, be sure to keep it.

If communication gets slow, it often helps to follow up by phone and email to apply some pressure. Patience is necessary here, but IKEA is generally accommodating with defective Metod parts.
