Hello everyone,

I have a BILLY shelf unit from IKEA with doors on both sides. When I open one of the doors, I notice the entire shelf wobbles slightly, which is obviously not ideal. It seems like the hinge or the fastening might not be properly fitted, or maybe the shelf isn’t completely level against the wall.

Has anyone experienced what exactly could cause the wobbling when opening the doors? And most importantly: What can I do specifically to permanently stabilize the shelf and prevent the wobbling? I am thinking about adjusting the hinges, adding extra securing to the wall, or possibly using washers or something similar.

I would appreciate detailed advice on the best way to tackle this issue.

Thanks and best regards!

If the shelf wobbles, first check whether it is securely screwed to the wall.

Make sure that the door hinges are properly adjusted, so the door sits flush against the cabinet.

It often helps to add washers to the hinges if the door sticks or the shelf is not perfectly level.

Hello Sofe64,

I understand your question well; such wobbling effects with shelves that have doors often come from several factors. The most important thing is that the shelf is perfectly level and securely fastened to the wall. IKEA usually provides a wall mounting kit, which should definitely be used to prevent tipping movements.

Regarding the doors: BILLY hinges can be finely adjusted with adjustment screws. Check if the doors run parallel to the cabinet frame. This helps prevent uneven distribution of forces when opening, which can cause the shelf to wobble.

If the shelf still wobbles slightly despite being wall-mounted, uneven floors could be the cause. Small shims or furniture gliders can help you level the shelf precisely.

Another option is to reinforce the inside of the cabinet with additional brackets if the material is a bit too flexible.

I hope this helps you! 🙂

I would almost disagree with that. Straight BILLY shelves are not really a challenge because of the wall mounting, but rather because of the material and the simple construction.

If the shelf wobbles unevenly, in my opinion, it’s mostly because IKEA does not use robust doors with solid hinges on this furniture.

I have often found that the usual tricks (wall mounting, washers) at best make it somewhat stable. The real solution is to reinforce the shelf yourself with sturdy metal brackets on the back or to replace the hinges with stronger ones for heavy doors.

Once the hinges are worn out, adjusting them won’t help much anymore.

That’s a good point, even though it may require a bit more effort from some DIYers. I resolved similar issues with my BILLY shelf by:

1. Securing the shelf firmly to the wall – without that, door problems are almost unavoidable.

2. Adjusting the hinges so the door fits better and doesn’t put unnecessary stress on the wood.

3. Then stabilizing it by attaching metal brackets (preferably galvanized or painted) at the back of the shelf with suitable screws.

4. Finally, installing special furniture glides under the shelf to compensate for slightly uneven floors.

Together, these steps provide an effective solution against wobbling and leaning.

Relying on the hinges alone usually isn’t enough. It can also help to carefully adjust the doors so that opening them doesn’t create significant leverage on the shelf.

Hope this helps as a practical guide.
