Hello everyone,

I recently had some of my Ikea Hemnes furniture transported during a move, but unfortunately, there was some damage during transit. Specifically, there are small dents and scratches on the doors and side panels, and some joints seem slightly loosened, which suggests stress occurred during transportation.

My specific question to the community is: What is the best way to repair Ikea Hemnes furniture after such transit damage to restore both stability and an attractive appearance?

I would appreciate tips on using repair kits, necessary tools, and any recommended steps for treatment. It would also be helpful to hear experiences regarding whether such damage can be permanently fixed with simple methods or if replacement parts are a better option.

Thank you in advance!

You can repair surface damage with wood filler and sanding. For loose joints, wood glue and clamps are useful. Replacement parts are usually offered by Ikea for a small fee.

To repair transport damage on Hemnes furniture, the following procedure is recommended:

- First, clean the damaged areas and remove any loose material.
- Fill small dents or scratches with wood filler or repair wax.
- After drying, sand the surface to achieve smoothness.
- For loosened joints: remove old glue residue and lightly roughen the tenons and dowel holes before gluing for better adhesion.
- Important: The Hemnes series uses glued and doweled components; damaged joints need to be securely fixed, preferably with clamps overnight.
- For visible scratches on painted surfaces, special furniture repair kits with color-matched touch-up pens or paint markers are suitable.

Recommendation: For larger structural damage, it’s better to order replacement parts directly from Ikea, as precise fitting is crucial.

I wonder if clamping with clamps is always the best solution. Ikea furniture is often designed for quick assembly rather than long-term repairs. Is there any evidence that this method improves stability over time?

Also, could repeated gluing weaken the material? Perhaps a combination of mechanical reinforcement (additional brackets or screws) and glue would be a more effective approach if the furniture is intended to bear weight later on.

That is indeed a valid point. With particleboard panels from Ikea, frequent gluing without thorough cleaning and inspecting the dowel holes can reduce the material’s strength.

Therefore, I recommend carefully preparing the surface and holes before re-gluing, possibly removing old glue residues with sandpaper. For damaged dowel holes, wood filler or a suitable wooden dowel can help reinforce the area.

To improve stability, discrete metal brackets can be added on the inside where visible. Although this might not look perfect, it significantly increases the durability of the repair.

Hey Kipeo! I once had a minor accident with my Hemnes cabinets as well – the tips here are great, I just wanted to add a few things:

- After filling and sanding, applying a thin layer of furniture wax or a color-matched furniture polish will restore the surface’s shine and help hide minor imperfections.

- For larger dents, sometimes using a damp cloth and carefully ironing over it can help raise the wood fibers slightly.

- And don’t hesitate to contact Ikea directly! They sell replacement parts, and sometimes that’s really the quickest solution.

Good luck, I’m sure you’ll get it looking good again!
