Matiaslau3 Jun 2016 14:07Hello everyone,
I have a specific question: What are your experiences with the combination of shoes and dirt on the IKEA KALLAX shelves? Specifically, I am interested in how durable the surface is against dirt, for example from street shoes, and whether the dirt can be easily removed without leaving scratches or unsightly marks. I would also like to know if there are any differences depending on the type of shoes used (sneakers, leather shoes, brogues, etc.) and if you might have tips on how to best protect or clean the KALLAX shelving system when such dirt occurs. Thank you in advance for your experiences and recommendations!

Hello Matiaslau,
I have been a big fan of KALLAX for several years and have often experienced shoes being placed directly on the surface or even dirt being brought in from outside. Basically, the surface is coated with melamine, which is quite resistant to scratches but not invincible. With regular street shoes, especially if they are still slightly damp and dirty, scratches can occur easily from sand grains or small stones if you put the shoes down directly and then move them slightly.
I really recommend removing the dirt roughly first – for example, with a damp cloth – before cleaning larger areas. For stubborn dirt, I have had good experiences using a mild dish soap. It is important not to use abrasive sponges or chemicals, as they can dull the surface or cause micro-scratches.
Regarding different types of shoes: Smooth leather or leather shoes tend to leave less dirt, but they can leave stains or slight discoloration on the surface if they stay in one spot for a long time when wet. Sneakers with tread usually attract more dirt, which then spreads out.
Another tip I can recommend is placing a thin felt mat or a special shoe tray under the shoes. This protects the KALLAX perfectly, especially if you regularly place shoes on it.
Question: Do you mainly use your KALLAX as a shoe rack, or do the shoes only stand there occasionally? That makes a difference in how you should care for the surface.

I think this question is really important, especially since I often feel unsure about whether I should place my shoes directly on furniture or not. Thanks for your tips!
That sounds like a good solution that I definitely want to try. I also find it annoying to constantly worry about damaging the beautiful piece of furniture.
Has anyone else experienced how prolonged moisture from shoes affects the surface?

Christia593 Jun 2016 15:38That’s great that you want to talk about exactly this! 🙂 I know the problem when you come in from the rain and just leave your shoes somewhere. I always keep a non-slip mat under my KALLAX; it really protects well against dirt and moisture! If something does get on the surface, just wipe it off with a damp cloth—it works perfectly! You just have to be careful not to scrub too hard, or it can quickly look scratched.
