parneoHello everyone,
I am planning to assemble my IKEA Besta shelving unit in an L-shaped configuration to create more storage space while maintaining flexibility in my living room. So far, I have mostly placed the modules in a straight line along the wall, but this leaves the corner of the room unused. My main question is: How can I efficiently connect and arrange the individual Besta components to form a stable L-shape that is both visually appealing and flexible with different door and shelf options?
I am especially interested in tips for joining the modules at the corner, stabilizing the overall structure, and suggestions for optimizing storage space with adjustable inserts.
Are there any differences to consider when combining Besta units of different heights? Should special fittings be used, or is the standard IKEA assembly hardware sufficient?
I look forward to your experiences and advice.

How can I efficiently connect and arrange the individual Besta elements to create a stable L-shape that is both visually appealing and flexible with different door and shelf options?Simply connect the modules at the inner corner using the joining screws (IKEA metal screws). For the L-shape, it’s important to add the rear corner reinforcements. Additional metal brackets on the inside bottom provide extra stability at the corner. You can use door and shelf options as usual; nothing changes in that regard.

I am particularly interested in tips for connecting the modules at the corner, stabilizing the structure, and suggestions on how to optimize storage space using adjustable inserts. For connecting the modules at the corner, I recommend using the original locking mechanisms (metal connectors from IKEA) along with sturdy metal corner brackets. This significantly increases the load-bearing capacity.
When combining modules of different heights, it is important to install them at the same level to ensure a neat finish. Height-adjustable feet are helpful for this purpose.
To maximize storage space, use adjustable inserts such as drawers with fronts, shelves, and internal dividers.
Additionally, the doors can be customized individually—glass, wood, or flap doors—depending on the desired appearance and function.
Stability and flexibility require careful assembly, especially with an L-shaped configuration, to prevent the elements from shifting. Wall mounting is also recommended, particularly for taller units.

Building the Besta as an L-shape has the advantage of maximizing the space and activating the corners. My tip: measure carefully beforehand – sometimes it doesn’t fit perfectly into the corner if walls or other furniture aren’t taken into account precisely. Even small details like aligning the cabinets properly are important; otherwise, you might end up with a tilt that negatively affects the doors.
You get great flexibility by combining open compartments with closed units. This way, you can display decorations while hiding smaller items at the same time. By the way, it’s really fun to experiment with the inserts – many shelves can be easily adjusted or replaced with drawers.
So: don’t hesitate to experiment, it’s going to look really great!
