Hello everyone,

I am currently preparing to transport our new Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets and want to avoid any damage during the process. The units are quite large and mostly made of coated panels with some delicate edges, especially on the doors and drawer fronts.

My specific question is: What particular measures would you recommend to prevent scratches, dents, or damage to fittings during transport?

Ideally, I am looking for advice on packaging or protective measures when loading, as well as tips on how to secure the cabinets properly inside the van to prevent shifting or bumping.

I have already considered using plastic wrap, blankets, or edge protectors, but I’m unsure what works best specifically for Metod.

Thank you in advance for your support!

Hello sonneo,

first of all, it’s good that you are thinking early about transport protection. For Ikea Metod furniture, there are a few basic principles I always recommend:

- Packaging: Wrap your furniture pieces individually with blankets or packing fleece to protect against scratches and pressure marks, especially on visible surfaces.

- Edge protection: Straight edges are vulnerable. Foam edge protectors or sturdy cardboard strips taped to the corners help here.

- Always pack screws and small parts separately and clearly labeled.

- Loading: Place heavy parts and large cabinets at the bottom and make sure nothing shifts. Fill gaps with padded blankets or bubble wrap.

- Securing: Use ratchet straps to prevent furniture from moving during sudden braking.

Even if it sounds obvious: allow plenty of time for loading so you don’t have to pack materials carelessly in a rush.

The answer is: protective packaging + secure fastening = fewer damages. Good preparation is the best protection here. If you like, I can also send you a small checklist.

In addition to Keatondra:

When transporting Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets, special care is required due to the coated surfaces and often relatively thin panels. To effectively prevent damage, please consider the following points:

- Flat items such as doors or side panels should be transported upright as much as possible and never stacked flat.
- The edges of the furniture often have particularly sensitive ABS edging, which must be protected with appropriate edge protectors (also available in foam).
- Avoid direct contact between multiple furniture pieces by cushioning each panel or cabinet individually.
- Ratchet straps are suitable for securing items in the vehicle. Using multiple strap points prevents shifting.
- Make sure that no hard or sharp objects (tools, other items) come into contact with the furniture.

This is essential. Even small movements during transport can damage the sensitive coatings.

If you are transporting the furniture in your own car, I recommend lining the cargo area with blankets and allowing enough space and padding. If the transport takes longer, check the securing periodically.

Summary: Create a well-padded loading area, secure everything with ratchet straps, and avoid contact with hard objects.

Additional notes:

- Always transport furniture parts upright, not lying flat.
- Protect edges with foam padding.
- Secure firmly to prevent shifting.
- Packaging protects against scratches.

These are the most important points.

Additionally, I want to mention that with IKEA Metod, you often have custom sizes and cut-to-fit pieces, which makes safe transportation even more challenging. So here is a tip:

- If possible, transport the largest parts individually and separately.
- Secure items like small pull-out boxes in sturdy cardboard boxes.
- If you have professional moving blankets, be sure to use them, as they are usually denser and provide better protection than regular fabric blankets.

I agree with this, as it prevents pressure marks and deformation.

In general: Well-padded and well-secured - that is the safe principle when dealing with IKEA Metod.
