Derrick1Hello everyone, I am currently planning my new kitchen using the Ikea Metod system and am wondering how to best install the drawer systems to maximize comfort and functionality in the kitchen. It is important to me that the drawers and pull-outs operate not only smoothly and stably but also as quietly and durably as possible. Does anyone have experience with the different drawer options available for Metod, such as soft-close systems, Blum, or other branded runners? What installation tips can you share to ensure the movement stays smooth and the drawers don’t stick even after long-term use? I am also interested in whether certain installation methods are particularly suitable for heavy pots or areas near the dishwasher, where moisture can be an issue. Some practical advice would be great, for example, how to best prepare the installation, what to watch for in alignment, and which mistakes to avoid.
Basically, when installing the Metod drawer systems, you should proceed very carefully. The drawer slides must be mounted exactly parallel and with as little tolerance as possible to prevent jamming and ensure smooth opening and closing. It is recommended to use a spirit level and, if necessary, a cross-line laser for alignment. It is also important to pre-drill the wooden panel correctly to avoid splitting the material.
Blum soft-close systems are highly recommended because they not only provide damping but also reduce wear on the mechanical parts. For heavy pots and pans, it is best to choose full-extension slides with metal ball bearings, which offer high load capacity.
Areas with high moisture should not come into direct contact with wooden components. If necessary, you can opt for moisture-resistant drawer sides and bottoms or apply suitable coatings.
Could you please describe in more detail which drawer types and cabinet widths you are planning? Then I can give you more specific advice.

Thank you for the initial assessment! My current plan includes plywood drawers with the Blum Tandembox system, mainly in 60cm (24 inches) wide base cabinets for pots and pantry items. I want the drawer fronts to move as smoothly as possible without squeaking. I wasn’t aware of the need to be so precise with parallel alignment, but I will address that carefully. The moisture issues you mentioned make sense since the dishwasher is right next to them. Are there any recommended materials or accessories from the Ikea or Blum ranges that work particularly well in this kind of environment? I would appreciate it if someone could provide specific product names or installation steps.

narDietmar11 Mar 2024 10:29The Tandembox systems from Blum are very sturdy and offer long-lasting performance. For the area next to the dishwasher, I recommend drawer bottoms made from water-resistant materials such as coated MDF or plywood with moisture protection (e.g., sealed). The Ikea Metod range includes special boards or planed components that are water-resistant.
During installation, it is important to align the drawer sides precisely to avoid any tension in the rails, as this can quickly cause noise and wear. Make sure to fully extend and realign the rails regularly if you use the drawers frequently.

Regarding the extension: Installing the drawer systems requires precise alignment of the cabinet sides. Even small deviations of just a few millimeters can later cause jamming or squeaking. The Blum Tandembox is well suited for 600mm (24 inch) wide units, as it is rated to support up to 30 kg (66 lbs) per drawer, which is sufficient for heavy cookware.
A key factor for comfort is adjusting the soft-close damping. If the damping does not feel optimal after installation, this should be checked again. Ikea often uses standard base panel thicknesses; it is advisable to switch to plywood or MDF with moisture-resistant properties, especially near the dishwasher area.
Another tip: Take your time to fit all components together as a trial before securing the final screws.
