ᐅ How can I optimize the construction of Ikea Metod kitchen islands for increased storage space?

horstdraHello everyone, I am currently planning the construction of a kitchen island using the Ikea Metod system and want to optimize the storage space as much as possible. My question is how to arrange the individual carcasses and drawers most effectively to achieve both large storage capacity and good organization.
Are there any proven layouts or specific modules that are particularly suitable for maximizing storage space in Metod kitchen islands? It is also important that the solution remains practical in everyday use, without creating too many small, cluttered compartments.
I look forward to your tips and experiences on the topic “How do I optimize the design of Ikea Metod kitchen islands for more storage?”

For optimizing storage space in Ikea Metod kitchen islands, I recommend the following systematic approaches:
- Use wide drawers (at least 60 cm (24 inches) wide) with compartments. These provide more usable storage space than many narrow sections.
- Drawer slides with full extension allow access to the entire depth, improving both visibility and capacity.
- Utilize corner solutions (e.g., carousel units or magic corners) if the island has a corner shape, to make the most of otherwise lost space.
- Plan at least two large pull-outs for pots and cookware, as these items are flat and wide.
- Consider modular additions such as inner drawers or inserts for cutlery and utensils; these create order and indirectly increase usable space.
The goal is to minimize wasted corners and maximize usable storage in an organized way. The combination of large drawers and smart insert systems has proven to be very effective.

I’m currently planning the construction of a kitchen island using the Ikea Metod system and want to optimize the storage space as much as possible.I’m familiar with that! Metod provides a solid foundation since the system is very versatile.
For building the island, I would recommend combining deep drawers for bulky dishes with shallow internal drawers for small items.
- Use fully extendable drawers for the main storage whenever possible.
- Consider integrating wall cabinets into the island if the space allows.
Planning the height is also important – kitchen islands are often designed lower, which can create extra storage opportunities. If the island matches the standard height of the other kitchen units (about 90cm (35 inches) worktop height), you usually have space above for an additional tier, such as open shelves or racks.
Another option is to use drawers with adjustable dividers, often called organizer inserts, to structure the storage efficiently.
Do you already have a specific configuration in mind, or would you like advice on selecting individual cabinet units?

Also, you might consider handleless fronts, which create a clean look and help make the space feel larger.

I know that well! With Metod, you have a good foundation because the system is very flexible.I completely agree. Assembly can sometimes be tricky if you don’t know exactly how to combine the features optimally. At first, I also felt like I wasn’t making good use of the storage space in my island, but rearranging the drawer sizes made a big difference.
Also, I think it’s worth trying unconventional combinations, like mixing pull-out drawers and open shelves for cookbooks or decorative items. This adds a bit more personality to the kitchen.
I wish you much success and patience with your planning! If you like, I can also share my design sketches—they really helped me.
