Hello everyone,

I have a question about securely mounting IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets, specifically how to firmly attach them to different wall types. My wall consists partly of conventional masonry (brick) and partly of a lightweight drywall with a stud frame behind it. My concern is that the cabinets, especially the wall cabinets, hold securely and do not wobble or come loose during everyday use.

What are the best methods and materials to reliably fasten the Metod cabinets – both to solid masonry and to lighter drywall partitions? Are there special anchors or fastening systems that work particularly well? Should additional reinforcements be installed behind the drywall? I appreciate any experience, tips, and also warnings about common mistakes, as I want to approach the installation in a truly professional manner.

Good question, but honestly: I think most people overestimate the effort required for fastening. Sure, there are always special anchors, but IKEA furniture isn’t necessarily designed for very heavy loads; the manufacturer itself is often the limiting factor. For masonry, standard anchors are usually sufficient. Drywall? That’s where it gets tricky.

Often, it’s enough to rely on the included metal hanging rails and screw them into solid spots. The idea of reinforcing the drywall with extra studs or supports is of course correct, but honestly: who really does that? I certainly don’t.

In short: I recommend not making it more complicated than necessary. In many cases, simple wood screws and common anchors are enough – as long as you don’t overload the cabinets.

That may be a practical approach, but I think it’s important, especially with lighter walls, to also consider safety and durability. I personally experienced an issue where a drywall partition was too weak and the cabinet came loose — which was unpleasant.

Therefore, you should really check whether there is an additional wooden or metal framework behind the drywall to which you can directly attach the fixture. Otherwise, I recommend using special hollow wall anchors with high load capacity. This way, you can achieve greater stability even with drywall partitions.

I understand the desire for straightforward solutions, but if you have children or heavy loads, it’s better to invest a bit more effort.

For a secure installation of IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets on different wall types, the following points should be considered:

- For solid masonry (brick, concrete), expansion anchors or universal anchors with suitable screws are recommended. The choice depends on the load-bearing capacity of the masonry.

- For drywall without a supporting frame, standard screws are not sufficient. Instead, special cavity anchors (e.g., metal toggle anchors) should be used.

- Ideally, the cabinets should be fastened to the load-bearing wooden or metal studs behind the drywall to anchor the screws into solid material.

- For hollow walls without studs, an alternative is to install a wooden batten or metal profile behind the drywall as additional reinforcement and attach the cabinets to it.

Important: The maximum load capacity of the anchors and screws, as well as the weight of the cabinet contents, must be assessed individually. Combining the mentioned methods significantly increases safety.

For stability:

- Masonry: universal anchors with screws.
- Drywall: hollow wall anchors and screws into studs.
- Do not use screws only in drywall panels.
- For upper cabinets, it is best to secure them to metal hanging rails.

The mounting method depends greatly on the wall type and requires careful planning:

1. Masonry:
- Use high-quality expansion anchors with the correct drill bit size.
- Always drive screws deep and centered into the masonry.
- Wall cabinets can be mounted using an IKEA mounting rail, which helps distribute the load evenly.

2. Drywall (plasterboard):
- Important: Locate the studs (wood or metal profiles) using a stud finder.
- Attach cabinets only to the studs, not just to the drywall panel.
- If studs are missing: install reinforcements behind the drywall (e.g., wooden battens) to create sturdy fixing points.
- Use metal toggle anchors or toggle bolts depending on the load.

3. Load distribution:
- For heavy or multiple wall cabinets, consider using base cabinets or worktops below as additional support.

4. Pre-drilling:
- Always pre-drill appropriately to avoid damaging screws and anchors.
