ᐅ Ikea Besta – How can I create a custom casing or enclosure?

Hello everyone,

I have been considering upgrading the look of my Ikea Besta shelving unit by adding a custom cladding that enhances both its appearance and functionality. I’m thinking of a tailored solution that fits the exact size and design of the Besta components, for example with side panels or some kind of door overlays to create a more harmonious overall look.

My question is: Which materials and design options would you recommend for such cladding that are easy to work with, durable, and can possibly be removed later without leaving any damage?

I’m also interested to hear if you have any experience combining wood, lacquered panels, or fabric coverings—and how you approached those projects.

I appreciate any tips, tricks, and insights!

I think it’s a bit overrated to get too fixated on elements like the Besta. Why not just go for something self-built without any cladding?

To me, that sounds like over-engineering, where the original purpose of the furniture—flexibility and easy assembly—is easily overlooked.

Don’t get me wrong, cladding can be nice, but sometimes you should just take the furniture as it is and add character with decoration. For me, minimalism also means accepting things as they are.

I see it a bit more nuanced. The flexibility of the Besta is definitely preserved if the casing is designed to be modular and reversible.

This can be implemented smartly without losing the benefits of the furniture piece. It is important to plan the effort realistically and to coordinate the materials and assembly methods well.

A casing can also enhance the furniture and help it blend better into your living space—without reducing its practical use.
