Why does my Malm bed only squeak under load?

I have a Malm bed from Ikea, and I’ve noticed that it only squeaks when I or someone else is lying on it or when the bed is under load. When it’s empty, there are no noises. From a technical perspective, I’m curious about the exact cause of this. Could it be due to the material, the construction, or perhaps the assembly? I built the bed myself, and all screws are tight. I want to understand if this behavior is typical and what can be done to minimize or eliminate the squeaking.

Hello roflo32,

The squeaking under load in furniture like the Malm bed is usually due to several factors that combine to cause the noise. First, the bed is mainly made of engineered wood, specifically particleboard, which forms a delicate connection with metal screws. Under stress, slight movement occurs between the individual components.

This happens because the load is distributed across the joints and fasteners, which can cause tiny micro-movements. These movements lead to friction, which results in the squeaking. Another factor is that screws or dowels can gradually loosen over time due to vertical movement, even if initially tightened properly; this is a slow process – with static load and no movement, the bed remains quiet.

I would recommend:
1. Systematically retightening all screws.
2. Treating the contact surfaces where the squeaking occurs with a thin layer of wax or silicone spray – this reduces friction.
3. Checking for any wood splinters in the contact areas that could increase the movement.

If you can provide more details about the load, for example weight or the room’s environment (such as humidity), the advice could be further refined.

My experience with IKEA beds like the Malm is that the squeaking almost always comes from small movements at the screw connections. This is technically due to the fact that wood and chipboard expand and contract, especially when you move or get up.

I also recommend regularly tightening the screws precisely, as the forces in everyday use change repeatedly. Checking once a month does no harm.

If the bed is on an uneven floor, different tensions at the legs can also occur, which may worsen the problem.

I would like to briefly summarize a small guide for diagnosing and fixing squeaking in Malm beds:

1. Understand the cause:
The squeaking only occurs under load because the load causes micro-movements at connection points. This is especially true for furniture made of wood or wood-based materials.

2. Check the assembly:
- Are all screws and joints really tight and not just seemingly so? Check every joint with an appropriate screwdriver or Torx bit.
- Screws often appear tight but can be loosened by small movements.

3. Treat contact points:
- Apply a thin layer of wax, MoS2 powder, or silicone spray at the contact points. Household candle wax can also reduce friction.

4. Optimize loading conditions:
- The bed should stand stable and level. An uneven floor can cause stresses that produce noises.

5. Additional tips:
- Sometimes a thin felt pad between touching wooden parts can help prevent squeaking.

Warum quietscht mein Malm Bett nur bei Belastung?

This is a completely normal phenomenon for solid wood-based furniture with screw connections, but with a few small steps, you can usually tackle the noise effectively.

The squeaking comes from small movements between the parts.

Tighten, lubricate, check if the floor is level.
