Hello everyone,

I have been considering getting a BILLY bookshelf from IKEA for some time, but I’ve heard that besides the standard models, there are versions with better quality. I am particularly interested in whether there are BILLY bookshelves that are built more robustly, possibly with stronger materials or better finishes, which are especially suitable for heavier loads or longer durability.

Maybe someone has experience with different versions of the BILLY bookshelf? Or are there special editions that you don’t immediately find in the IKEA catalog? I don’t want to just go for the standard model if there are alternatives that are noticeably better in quality.

I would appreciate it if you could share your knowledge or experiences, as that would really help me make a purchasing decision!

Hey rotebar!

It’s great that you are taking such a close look at the BILLY shelving unit! 🙂 From my own experience, I can say that there are indeed versions that are a bit higher quality, although IKEA doesn’t officially label them as such.

Usually, these are BILLY shelves with special coatings or thicker shelves. Sometimes you’ll also find units with glass doors or with backing panels that make the whole thing more stable.

The material has improved over the years as well, although the basic quality of the standard model is already solid. If you plan to use the shelf for really heavy items, I would definitely recommend going for the reinforced shelves.

Keep at it! 🙂 If you want, I can also tell you which models I have—they really hold up well!

Hello rotebar,

I would like to add a bit more to that: While IKEA offers the BILLY shelving unit in a fairly standardized format, there are regional differences and in some stores special versions with different materials.

It is important to know that there are versions with and without reinforcement strips. Those with reinforced shelves are particularly useful for heavy loads.

There are also accessories, such as additional back panels or reinforced legs, which can be purchased separately and installed to increase durability.

If you plan to use the shelving unit for heavy loads, you should also pay attention to the assembly instructions, as wall mounting significantly improves stability.

If you like, I can also put together a small checklist to help you better assess the quality of individual BILLY models.

Briefly addressing your question: Yes, there are BILLY models with reinforced shelves.

Pay attention to the product numbers, as they indicate this. Additionally, some versions use thicker wood or MDF.

Otherwise, all are constructed similarly.

Hello again,

I wanted to add that in some IKEA countries there is also a so-called "BILLY Professional" or "BILLY solid," which is usually designed only for commercial customers and is therefore built more sturdily.

You can ask IKEA customer service if this is available in your country.

Regarding coatings: Some versions have laminates that offer better protection against scratches and moisture. Be sure to pay attention to this, as it can increase the shelf’s lifespan.

If you plan to move the shelf frequently, these coatings are also an advantage.

I hope this helps!
