ᐅ How can I integrate additional power outlets into IKEA Besta units?

GarritbeHello everyone,
I am planning to add extra power outlets to my IKEA Besta sideboard to better supply my media devices. The outlets should be integrated as discreetly as possible without compromising the stability or appearance of the furniture. I am also interested in how to organize the wiring to avoid cable clutter behind the sideboard and how to make good use of any available interior space. What solutions have you already implemented or can recommend for this? Are there specific power strips or inserts suitable for installation in an IKEA Besta? I would appreciate any tips on installation, fitting, and cable management!

your question is very well framed, as it covers both the technical and practical aspects. Basically, there are several ways to integrate additional power outlets inside the Besta unit:
- Use flat power strips that can be attached to the back panel or inside the bottom of the furniture piece. Make sure to consider the depth of the strip so that it does not protrude.
- Install built-in sockets that fit into a cut-out opening. It is important to check if the back panel is suitable for such installation (material thickness, stability).
- Cable management: Use cable ducts or spiral wrap to bundle and protect the cables neatly.
Safety is crucial: ensure the outlet is not overloaded and that an appropriate circuit breaker is installed.
Could you let us know which devices you want to connect (power consumption, etc.)? And approximately how many outlets you need? This will help us better assist with your situation.

Could you also specify which devices you plan to connect (power consumption, etc.)?I think this is important because the requirements for the power outlets depend greatly on whether you want to connect a TV, receiver, game console, charging stations, or even larger devices like media PCs.
Additionally, I would recommend considering power outlets with built-in surge protection and child safety features, especially if the sideboard is in the living room and accessible to children.
In general, flat power strips can be easily fixed with cable ties or double-sided adhesive tape. For added convenience, there are also specially shaped power strips that can be mounted on furniture edges. You can also integrate power outlets with USB ports into the Besta if you want to charge mobile devices as well.
If you like, I can give you some tips on measuring and drilling into the cabinet – this should be done carefully to avoid compromising the structural integrity.

Could you please specify which devices you plan to connect (power consumption, etc.)?Thanks for asking! I mainly plan to use the Besta for TV accessories: a PlayStation 5 (around 350 W max. consumption), an Apple TV (minimal), an AV receiver (approximately 150 W), and additionally a charging stand for a phone and tablet to be powered from the outlet. So ideally at least 4 standard sockets in total.

It’s also important to me that the sockets are securely installed and remain easily accessible for maintenance.
I’m a bit cautious about drilling holes since I don’t want to damage the furniture.
Does anyone have experience with built-in socket modules that can be installed in the side panels? Or do you have less invasive alternatives?

Does anyone have experience with built-in power outlet modules that can be installed in side panels?Installing built-in power outlet modules into the side panels of the Besta unit is possible, but there are a few important points to consider:
- The side panels are usually thinner (about 1.5 cm (0.6 inches) particleboard), so you need very shallow built-in outlets.
- Cutting the opening should be done precisely, ideally using a router and an appropriate template.
- The back panel must not be damaged during installation, as this could compromise the stability of the furniture.
- Electrically: For a fixed installed module, you need a safe power supply, for example, a cable routed through the back panel and connected to a suitable wall socket.
As an alternative, you can also use “furniture power outlets” (e.g., from manufacturers like Brennenstuhl or Bachmann) that are specifically designed for furniture installation. These are usually slim, have a flush surface, and often feature a flip cover for a more aesthetic look.
If you want, I can provide tips on how to route the cable neatly behind the Besta unit.
What type of electrical connection do you have in your room (type, number of available sockets)?
To keep cable management and socket integration in the Besta neat and safe, I recommend the following approach:
- Avoid using flat, protruding power strips in plain sight; instead, integrate them behind a flap or inside the sideboard.
- Use cable ducts with a self-adhesive backing that can be easily attached to the back panel or side walls, guiding cables invisibly to the floor or power outlet.
- Ensure that all cables used have a sufficient cross-section for the maximum power of your devices to prevent overheating.
- Before installing sockets: Check with a multimeter that your wall outlet is properly protected.
- If possible, have an electrician handle the connection, especially for permanently installed socket modules in furniture.
These steps help ensure the safety and durability of the installation.
