Hello everyone, I am planning to arrange several KALLAX units from IKEA in a U-shape to create a room divider as well as a practical storage solution. My main question concerns the options for securely connecting these individual modules: Are there specific connectors or fasteners designed for this purpose that allow me to assemble the KALLAX shelves firmly and slip-resistant without drilling or screwing? The units need to remain stable, especially since I want to place plants and decorations on top. Does anyone have experience or concrete recommendations on how to properly secure them?

Hey! 🙂 I think your idea is really practical, and yes, I’ve heard about this: there are actually connectors for KALLAX that don’t require screws. For example, small plastic clips or snap-in connectors that fit between the side panels to link two shelves. They’re mainly intended for joining units side by side, but I imagine you could adapt them for a U-shaped arrangement as well. I would definitely make sure the modules are secured against tipping, for example by attaching small angle brackets to the back panel. It definitely makes the whole setup more enjoyable when it’s stable! 😉

The challenge with a U-shaped configuration using KALLAX modules often lies in the corner connections. IKEA itself does not offer special corner connectors for KALLAX, but there are third-party suppliers that offer custom-cut metal or plastic clamps, which fit well and help stabilize the shelving system. Alternatively, I recommend using sturdy mounting clips combined with metal brackets to secure the corner and side connections. It is also important to prevent the modules from slipping on the floor, possibly by using non-slip pads or clips.

There is no original simple plug-in system for KALLAX from IKEA. If you want to firmly connect the modules in a U-shape, it is best to use small furniture connectors or screws with brackets. Without drilling, it will be difficult; I recommend using non-slip pads underneath and angle brackets on the sides.

For the technical feasibility of creating a U-shaped connection of several KALLAX modules, I recommend a combination of clamp connectors and additional reinforcements:

1. Plastic clamp connectors that fit precisely between the side panels. Although these are not available directly from IKEA, they can be found from third-party suppliers.

2. Metal brackets on the inside corners, which are attached to the back panel with screws. These provide significantly greater stability.

3. Use felt or rubber pads under the shelves to prevent slipping on smooth floors.

The load on the shelves should also be taken into account, as the U-shape creates point loads at the connection points. This helps to avoid rubbing or unstable joints.

Hello Finemau, I find your idea of a U-shape very creative and especially suitable for multifunctional rooms. I want to mention that from my experience with a similar construction, stability is crucial – particularly when there are children or pets in the house. So, if you are using plug-in connections, I would also recommend a secure attachment to the wall to prevent accidents.

Investing in appropriate brackets or additional connector plates might be worthwhile, even if it seems tedious at first. Safety comes first! And don’t worry, such modifications often make the furniture look even cooler. :-)
