Hello everyone,
I am currently planning my new kitchen and have chosen the IKEA Metod system because it is flexible and modular. Now I would like to know how to customize the Metod kitchen furniture in a more individual and creative way to move away from the standard look. I am especially interested in options that go beyond simply changing the fronts or handles, such as creative combinations of materials, color accents, clever storage solutions, or custom adjustments to the cabinets themselves.
What design options have you already used or are you aware of? Are there installation tips, tricks for working with the Metod system, or special additions and accessories that can meaningfully expand the system? Practical experiences that help turn a standard kitchen furniture program into something truly unique would be particularly helpful. Thanks in advance for all suggestions!

Hello,
first idea: change fronts and handles. Besides IKEA’s own options, there are third-party providers with custom designs.
Also: optimize the interior fittings, for example with adjustable shelves, inserts, and drawer organizers.
And: choose worktops made from materials other than the standard – wood, concrete look, stone, or HPL.

I would like to add: For a truly personalized design, using deliberate color contrasts and a mix of materials is worthwhile. For example, you can highlight the cabinet carcass colors by applying alternative paint finishes or veneers – although this is usually done afterwards by a professional painter.
Built-in appliances can also be visually customized to create a more cohesive or modern appearance.
Additionally, some suppliers offer custom-made fronts and special handles that can be combined with Metod. Assembly tips: Always align the carcasses carefully beforehand to avoid gaps.

Hello to-mi,
I customized my Metod kitchen by combining several systems. It’s important to plan the basic structure carefully before choosing the fronts.
- I incorporated some open shelves, which I decorated with ornamental elements.
- Lighting inside the cabinets or between the modules (LED strips) also creates a special effect.
- I combined the interior fittings with both IKEA and third-party products, such as custom drawer inserts.
Additionally, it’s possible to paint the fronts or cover them with vinyl if you want a specific color or design that IKEA doesn’t offer as standard.
If you like, I can share various sources for materials and practical tips on how to assemble everything.

Assembly tips: Always align the carcasses carefully beforehand, otherwise you will get gaps. How exactly do you ensure this? Are there practical tools or techniques during assembly that help?
And Nadine, thanks for your detailed reply! Open shelving is a nice way to add personality—could you say something about the possible load limits? Sometimes I’ve read that IKEA shelves are only suitable for light items.
Here is a tip: Metod carcasses can also be redesigned by applying self-adhesive foil or special paint (e.g., furniture paint).
This allows you to achieve a new look quickly and with little effort.
However, the quality of the foil should be good to ensure the surface remains easy to maintain.
