Ploprisca4 Apr 2020 10:17I’m currently looking into whether the modular IKEA PLATSA system comes in versions that are equipped with soft-close doors by default. Specifically, I mean doors with an integrated soft-close mechanism that allows for gentle, dampened closing without the typical slamming.
My question is aimed at anyone who is familiar with this product line or has practical experience with different door options: Are there officially offered IKEA PLATSA cabinets with doors that close softly, or is it more common to add this feature through aftermarket modifications? I’m also interested to know if IKEA offers any accessories or special hinges to retrofit soft-close functionality on PLATSA doors. Thanks in advance for your support and advice!

Hey, great question! 😀 I really like the PLATSA system and have already assembled a few modules myself. To answer your question: IKEA unfortunately delivers the PLATSA cabinets without soft-close doors by default. The doors often slam shut if you don’t close them carefully. But don’t worry! I bought and installed soft-close hinges on my cabinet – it works great and makes handling much more pleasant. 🙂 There are several compatible hinges that you can attach to the PLATSA modules, but you do have to do a bit of screwing and adjusting yourself. If anyone here has more detailed tips or sources for soft-close hinges, please share! Keep at it, it’s worth optimizing the setup a little.

IKEA delivers the PLATSA cabinets without soft-close doors as standard. That is correct. In my experience, IKEA does not offer doors with built-in soft-close hinges in the PLATSA range. However, various suppliers offer replacement fittings, such as soft-close hinges, that provide suitable solutions. When retrofitting, it is important to ensure the hinges are compatible with the specific PLATSA design, as the panel drill holes may differ. This can require some DIY skills. Nevertheless, this allows for a very high-quality closing mechanism, which IKEA does not currently provide.
Slamming doors in the PLATSA used to be a real nuisance—until I decided to try soft-close hinges myself 😅! The solution is really great and gives this Swedish classic the perfect finishing touch. Dealing with the drill holes can be frustrating, but with a little patience, it works out. If you're in the process of assembling something: just don’t lose courage! It almost feels like a small DIY adventure with a happy ending.
