Hello everyone,

I have purchased some Ikea Platsa furniture for my apartment and am now facing the challenge of how to clean the surfaces without damaging them.

Specifically, I am interested in tips for removing everyday dirt, grease stains, and light scratches. Which cleaning products are recommended, and which should be avoided? Does anyone use special techniques or home remedies?

I would appreciate any advice on gentle yet effective cleaning methods, as I want to keep the surfaces in good condition for as long as possible.

That’s a valid question, because Ikea PLATSA surfaces usually have melamine coatings or laminates that can be sensitive to chemical substances.

In general, I advise against using aggressive cleaners or solvents. Even microfiber cloths are not automatically safe: they should be as soft as possible to avoid scratches.

From my experience, tap water with a few drops of dish soap is effective and safe. For stubborn stains, use a soft sponge and, if needed, some diluted vinegar solution. Also, avoid leaving the material wet for a long time; dry it after cleaning.

One point I often question: it’s frequently recommended to avoid abrasive cleaners and alcohol-based products. For Ikea-specific surfaces, it’s important to check the care instructions, as some laminates can be sensitive to alcohol and may become dull.

Who else has different experiences or maybe even scientific sources? I feel such tips are often subjective.

To clarify Hakante48’s question:

Ikea PLATSA furniture mainly uses surfaces coated with melamine resin or foil on MDF or particleboard. These finishes are durable but can be sensitive to certain cleaning agents.

My recommendations are based on factual research and original guidance from Ikea:
- Use a mild cleaning detergent that does not contain solvents or bleaches.
- A soft, damp cloth is best for removing dust and dirt.
- For grease stains, dish soap in lukewarm water is ideal.
- Avoid abrasive cleaners, scrubbing sponges, and harsh cleaners containing ammonia or alcohol.
- Always dry the surfaces thoroughly to prevent water spots or swelling.

For minor scratches, gently treating the area with a soft cotton cloth and some furniture polish (silicone-free) can help, but it is important to check if the polish is suitable for the material.

If there are specific stains, I recommend spot cleaning with a mild soap solution.

In conclusion: Ikea provides care instructions for many of their products. I advise consulting these directly if you have any doubts.

Exactly! Here’s what I’ve learned:

- For daily cleaning, a damp microfiber cloth without any additives is sufficient.
- For grease or crumbs, warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap works well. Just gently wipe and dry immediately after.

I fully agree. I would add that even alcohol-based products like window cleaners can, in the worst case, make the surface dull and brittle.

One more tip: For minor scratches on the films, gently rubbing with a pencil eraser sometimes helps. But this should only be tried if the damage is not very visible and sensitive areas are avoided.

It’s important to always dry the furniture thoroughly after cleaning to prevent water spots and mold, especially around joints or edges.

If you have dogs, children, or other increased wear, regular cleaning with gentle products is recommended rather than infrequent intensive cleaning.
