Hello everyone,

I assembled an Ikea Kallax shelf unit following the instructions carefully. However, the shelf still wobbles slightly, even though all parts seem properly installed and the screws have been tightened. It stands on a fairly level floor, and I have checked that no parts are bent or damaged. The stability issues mainly occur when I place something on it or gently push the shelf.

What could be missing here to eliminate the wobbling? Are there any known assembly issues, hidden components like brackets, or other tips that are not immediately obvious?

I would appreciate any clear and practical advice, as I would really like to use the shelf as a secure storage solution. Thanks in advance!

Hey, I know exactly what you mean! You assemble the shelf properly, but once you place something on it, it still feels a bit wobbly. Often, this happens because with Kallax units, the back panel is sometimes only attached with small nails, which don’t provide enough stability.

If the back panel is only loosely fixed, try using corner braces or angle brackets that you can install on the inside corners to reinforce the frame. This is a quick way to get your wobbly shelf under control.

Honestly, tightening the screws again after a few days can also make a big difference, since wood or particleboard tends to settle a bit. :-) Good luck with it!

To add: The back panel of the Kallax unit is indeed a crucial part of its stability. It is usually made of thin hardboard material and is attached with small metal pins (nails). If the back panel is not mounted perfectly flat and tightly, the shelving unit can flex forward or sideways.

Step by step, you should check the following:

1. Make sure the back panel is completely flat and properly aligned, without any twisting.
2. Inspect all small nails or staples – if any are missing, movement can occur immediately.
3. Consider adding small brackets inside afterward, especially at the bottom and top corners. These are sometimes not included by Ikea but significantly increase the torsional stiffness.

Also, pay attention to the feet or adjustable glides – even a slight height difference there can cause rocking. Adding felt pads or thin wooden shims underneath the unit often works wonders if the floor is slightly uneven.

If you describe in more detail which version of the Kallax you have and whether the back panel is fully screwed in or only nailed, I can provide more specific advice.

This already sounds well thought out, but I still recommend carefully checking the assembly of the connection points once more. For Kallax systems, it is advisable to tighten the included dowels and screws carefully, either with a torque tester or at least manually with attention – especially with particleboard, over-tightening can cause damage, but under-tightening is also problematic.

In addition, small irregularities in the floor are often the cause of such wobbling. Check the floor with a spirit level under the shelving unit in several places. If it is not perfectly level, an adjustable furniture foot or shimming with small pieces can help align the Kallax unit properly.

If you can attach the shelving unit to the wall, this is always the most secure method to ensure stability. Ikea provides corresponding brackets for this purpose.

So if you want to avoid wall mounting, you must at least ensure the surface is perfectly level – this is often the crucial factor.

Thanks for the tips, PLOMA! I have the 5x5 unit (so 25 compartments). The back panel is actually only nailed, just as you said. I didn’t count the nails, but it looked fully covered.

The bottom is really level; I used a spirit level. The shelf is also freestanding, without wall anchors, because it’s supposed to stand in the middle of the room.

I’ve done that several times without any significant improvement.

I haven’t installed any brackets yet. I’m thinking of trying that, though I’m skeptical if it will look right.

Your advice is very helpful; I’ll try the brackets and get back to you.
