ᐅ What are the best safety measures for securing IKEA BESTA units to walls?

Metau42Hello everyone,
I am planning to mount an IKEA Besta shelving unit on the wall and would like to know which securing measures are truly optimal for this purpose. I am aware that Besta components come with included mounting hardware, but these do not seem suitable for all wall types. Especially with different wall constructions such as concrete, drywall (plasterboard), or brick, I am uncertain how to ensure maximum stability and safety to prevent the shelving unit from tipping or falling over.
Which wall plugs, screws, or additional brackets are recommended? Should separate wall anchors be used beyond the IKEA specifications? Are there any experiences with special securing systems for wall mounting Besta or similar furniture?
I look forward to well-founded advice and practical experiences that can help me find the best solution.

Interesting question, @Metau42.
I think the IKEA fasteners are often overrated. They usually only include basic wall plugs, which aren’t suitable for some types of walls. I would even say that if you want to be on the safe side, you should invest in a good selection of heavy-duty anchors.
For concrete walls, metal anchors with sufficiently long screws are useful, as they provide the necessary support. For drywall (plasterboard) walls, however, those won’t work; you need special hollow wall metal anchors or toggle bolts—standard IKEA plugs are often far too weak for this.
This is exactly the key point: you always need the right anchor for your wall type and possibly additional wall brackets, especially if the shelf is very tall or wide.
In my opinion, you can never rely solely on the IKEA instructions if you want the installation to be truly stable and secure.

To ensure the secure mounting of IKEA BESTA units on walls, the following points should always be considered:
- Check the wall type: concrete, brick, or drywall all require different types of anchors.
- For solid walls, heavy-duty anchors made of metal or nylon with suitable screws are ideal.
- For drywall, do not use simple plastic anchors. Instead, hollow wall anchors with expanding or toggle mechanisms should be used.
- The mounting must always be attached to the wall structure, not just to the drywall panel.
- The number of mounting points should correspond to the width and load-bearing capacity of the BESTA unit. For large shelves, at least three to four mounting points are recommended.
- Additional brackets or wall-mount screw supports can increase stability, especially under heavy loads.
I can fully confirm this. It is essential to move beyond just IKEA hardware and select anchors appropriate to the wall type to ensure long-term safety.

Hello @Metau42,
I’m adding some practical tips, especially for beginners who may have never attached furniture to the wall before:
- Before drilling, always check the spot for electrical wiring and water pipes to avoid damage.
- As a general rule for different wall types:
- Solid walls = expansion anchors or metal anchors with appropriate screws
- Cavity walls (e.g., drywall) = cavity anchors (toggle bolts, spring toggle anchors)
- It’s often worth spending a bit more on suitable anchors and screws and focusing on quality. It’s a matter of safety, not saving money.
- IKEA’s mounting hardware is often intended as a basic solution for simple standard use. For somewhat larger or heavier BESTA units, it’s best to be cautious and reinforce.
- Secure wall mounting is especially essential for shelves in children’s rooms to prevent accidents.
Exactly, I myself mounted a large BESTA unit with four fixing points on a concrete wall. No problems, absolutely stable.
If you need advice on specific types of anchors, feel free to ask!

To achieve the optimal secure mounting of an IKEA BESTA shelf on the wall, you should first always focus on the structural conditions of the wall.
- For concrete walls, I recommend metal expansion anchors with screws of 6–8 mm (0.24–0.31 inch) diameter and at least 60–80 mm (2.4–3.1 inches) length, depending on the load.
- For brick masonry, special brick anchors can be used, which provide better grip than universal anchors.
- For drywall (plasterboard) walls, cavity anchors or toggle anchors are absolutely necessary, as they distribute the load over a larger area behind the panel.
In addition, the BESTA should not be fixed only at the top back panel. It is also advisable to use angle brackets or corner profiles attached under the shelf on the sides to prevent tipping.
If in doubt, the use of heavy-duty anchors or chemical anchors for very large or heavily loaded BESTA systems is a worthwhile safety investment.
I hope these tips are helpful; the best safety is always a combination of appropriate anchors, a sufficient number of mounting points, and additional brackets.
