Hello everyone,

I am currently considering having some of the fronts on my new IKEA Metod kitchen project painted—mainly because I often find IKEA’s standard colors and finishes a bit too plain or lacking in quality. My question is: is it really worth having the fronts painted for IKEA Metod, both in terms of visual quality and durability?

I’ve heard that painting can add quite a bit to the cost and might change the typical appeal of IKEA fronts. At the same time, I wonder if the relatively simple basic construction of Metod is even suitable for painting.

Has anyone had experience with whether painting Metod kitchen fronts adds value, or if it’s more trouble than it’s worth? Also, how does it hold up in daily use and what about maintenance?

Thanks in advance for your opinions and tips!

That was exactly my concern at first. I had a Metod kitchen professionally painted because I wanted a truly custom color. Visually, the result turned out great—much more refined than the standard fronts.

However, I have to admit that the effort and costs were significantly higher than expected. The paint job was excellent, but the surface is more sensitive than the factory laminate fronts. I already have two small scratches that I can’t easily remove.

At first, I was unsure if I really wanted this, but in hindsight, I don’t regret it because the overall look feels much more exclusive. If you’re willing to factor in the maintenance, I would recommend it.

This is an important point that I would like to explain in more detail. Painting Metod kitchen fronts is technically possible, but it greatly depends on the quality of the original surface. IKEA often uses medium-density fiberboard (MDF) with a thin coating or foil for Metod fronts.

While this substrate is suitable for painting, achieving a durable result usually requires a full pre-treatment: sanding, priming, several layers of paint, and a final sealant.

Choosing the right paint is also crucial. A high-quality two-component (2K) paint offers better resistance to scratches, heat, and moisture.

I also recommend having the painting done by a professional, as the surface texture of Metod fronts is not always ideal for all types of paint. Poor painting can quickly lead to peeling or unsightly surface defects.

Although painting can significantly improve the visual appearance, keep in mind that it is not the same as a solid wood front or a fully lacquered front. Its durability is better than foil but lower than that of durable laminate fronts.

You should consider this when making your decision, and it’s best to compare different samples in person to weigh whether the effort, cost, and later maintenance are worth the visual improvement.

Additionally, I would like to add: Painting an IKEA Metod cabinet is always a compromise. IKEA produces Metod using cost-effective materials that look good but are not ideally suited for subsequent surface treatments.

If you decide to go with painting, keep these points in mind:
- Painting usually increases the cost per front by 50–100%, depending on the type of paint and the workshop.
- Surface hardness can be improved but is not comparable to factory-finished fronts.
- Wear marks such as fingerprints or scratches tend to show sooner than on original painted fronts.

An alternative could be to choose IKEA’s own or third-party fronts that are already painted, which generally offer better durability.

Conclusion: Whether painting is worthwhile depends largely on your aesthetic expectations, budget, and willingness to maintain the surfaces.
