Hello everyone,

I own several Ikea Platsa shelving units that I would like to upgrade with compatible doors. However, I haven’t been able to find clear information on the best way to do this, as Ikea sometimes only sells the doors as sets with frames or the construction varies.

My specific questions are:
- Are there any good alternatives to the original PLATSA doors that are easy to install?
- If I want to add the original doors, is there anything special I should consider regarding mounting or measurements?
- Does anyone have experience with custom-built solutions or recommended suppliers of doors that fit well with the PLATSA system?

I would appreciate detailed tips, including advice on tools, installation, or sources for spare parts. Thanks in advance!

The original PLATSA doors have special hinges that are precisely designed for the system. If you want to retrofit them, pay attention to the hinge recess.

Alternatively, you can install standard furniture doors with compatible hinges, but this is more complex.

Hello numohau,

I had the same situation with my PLATSA wardrobe. To attach the doors, you need the PLATSA door fitting set from Ikea, as these hinges fit exactly to the mounting points on the frame.

If you are looking for alternatives, the problem often is that the drill holes and measurements are very specific. DIY solutions can work, but you either have to drill new holes (which can affect appearance and stability) or use suitable adapter strips to install standard hinges.

In terms of tools, I recommend a cordless drill with a thin drill bit for possible new holes, as well as a spirit level for precise alignment. For spare parts, you can inquire directly at Ikea; they often still have separate door panels and hinges in stock.

If you want doors with glass or other materials, you should keep in mind that the system is designed for the usual wood or chipboard panels, and other materials are more complex to fasten.

I hope this helps!

As a supplement:

PLATSA is a flexible system that, while modular, uses doors mounted on a special frame rail technique. This follows its own hole pattern and drilling scheme, which is not standardized across the industry.

This means:
- Original PLATSA doors fit precisely due to the integrated hinges and fittings.
- For retrofitting, it is recommended to buy the original doors or at least the original hardware to ensure compatibility.

A DIY solution often requires precise adjustments:
- You should know the exact position of the hinge mounting points.
- Use durable hardware, as the system supports significant weight.

Alternatively, a cabinetmaker can custom-make doors with standard hinges, but these are usually not designed for snap-in installation and require different mounting methods.

My advice: If you don’t want to use the original Ikea version, create detailed measurements and check possible alternative fittings. In case of doubt, the additional effort will often exceed the cost difference of the original doors.

Regarding tools: drill bits of 3-5 mm (0.12–0.20 inches), screwdriver with matching bit, possibly a chisel for minor wood adjustments.

If interested, I can send you the drilling dimensions and mounting points.

I would like to add that, in addition to the fastening, it is important to consider usage and load:

- PLATSA doors are often installed in high-use areas (e.g., frequent opening and closing), so the hinge material should be of high quality.
- If you choose alternatives with standard furniture hinges, check their load capacity and manufacturing quality.
- For retrofitting, a precise alignment is essential (using a level, spacers), otherwise the door will not close properly.

Furthermore, door width adjustments are possible when retrofitting with standard doors by using edge strips or beading to optimize gaps.

Personally, I would recommend original parts for PLATSA doors because the installation mechanism is well-designed and ensures a secure, precise fit.

This statement is correct, but it is not sufficient as a solution.

An important question, in my opinion, is how flexible you want to be when retrofitting and to what extent you are willing to make modifications to the furniture. There are certainly creative approaches, such as magnetic catches or rail systems from hardware stores, which can be adapted.

Here, the stability aspects should be explained in more detail, as improper drilling can weaken the supporting material. Likewise, adapter solutions require precise planning, or else the functionality will suffer.

In general, I recommend creating a sketch of all fastening points and analyzing the forces before modifying the system. Otherwise, you risk the doors tilting or becoming misaligned during everyday use.

Material compatibility is also an important issue, especially if doors made from different materials are to be used, as Jukin has already mentioned.
