Hello everyone, I am currently planning to install IKEA Metod kitchen countertops in my new apartment. The problem is that the floors are far from level – partly slightly sloped or uneven, which makes securing the countertops more challenging.

My main question is: How can I securely and permanently attach the IKEA Metod countertops when the subfloor is uneven? Are there any specific techniques, tools, or fastening methods that have proven effective to ensure the countertops sit stable without wobbling or being damaged?

I look forward to your tips and solutions, including practical examples!

Hello doreman, I can well understand how frustrating an uneven floor can be during kitchen installation. In our house, we also had spots with different heights, which affected the stability of the countertop. From my experience, it helps a lot to equip the frames of the Metod units with adjustable feet and set them precisely so that the countertop has a consistently level base. A somewhat flexible countertop, such as solid wood, can adjust a bit more than laminate surfaces. However, you should still avoid having the countertop supported only at a few points—I used sturdy substructures for this. I also considered using small wooden shims to level things out, but be careful: it must not become unstable. What exactly does your subfloor look like? Are there significant bumps or just slight unevenness?

To address the topic objectively: The IKEA Metod countertops are primarily designed to be installed on a level, stable base. For uneven floors, the kitchen base cabinets must be installed so that they are completely level. The recommended steps are: - First, secure the Metod base cabinets with the adjustable feet at the highest point of the floor, then gradually adjust the feet. - A spirit level is essential at all times for precise leveling. - For larger irregularities, wooden shims or special spacers can be inserted to prevent pressure points. Only on a level base is a proper and lasting attachment of the countertop ensured. Installing the countertop on an uneven foundation causes stress and can lead to damage. Important: Avoid point loads caused by improper installation. The result can be cracks or deformations.

In short: first, align the base cabinets precisely. Then place the panels on top and secure them with the IKEA brackets. Use shims or supports if there are significant unevenness. Adjust the feet until everything is stable.

Hello doreman, I would like to add from my experience: Besides the adjustable feet of the Metod base cabinets, it is useful to create an additional leveling layer to compensate for larger floor irregularities. For example, I used laminated wood panels of the right thickness as a base, which I sanded completely flat beforehand. This allowed the kitchen units to be perfectly leveled. It is also advisable to use rubber seals between the countertop and the base cabinets during installation. This increases stability and prevents damage from minimal movements. Depending on the severity of the unevenness, a simple drywall made of particle boards as a leveling layer can also help. If you aim for perfection, small metal brackets for better fastening are worth considering – you can buy these at a hardware store.

I recently dealt with the same issue: In my kitchen, the floor has significant variations of up to 1.5 cm (0.6 inches) between individual tiles. This makes things tricky.

I thought that was a great tip! I did something similar and also turned the feet almost all the way up. In addition, as recommended, I placed rubber pads between the countertop and the base cabinet. This provides some flexibility and cushioning. However, I have to say that without a level and patience, this would hardly have worked. I also had concerns about whether the IKEA fasteners would hold, but if everything is properly adjusted, the countertop sits rock solid.
