Hello everyone, I bought a Billy bookcase and plan to assemble it this weekend. During my research, I came across several reports where users made various assembly mistakes, which sometimes led to instability or damaged parts. Therefore, I would like to proactively avoid common issues before I start.
My specific question is: Which checkpoints should I systematically review at each step of assembling a Billy bookcase to reliably prevent typical assembly errors? Is there a practical checklist or proven tips that focus on the critical phases of the assembly process?
I really want to avoid all unnecessary mistakes, especially when screwing and mounting the shelves and back panels. Thank you in advance for your helpful advice!

Hello everyone,
I would like to go into a bit more detail and ask right away: Which exact model of the Billy shelf are you using, LIPAU9? The version with or without doors, and what shelf height? Because some typical assembly issues are related to the shelf size – for example, very tall shelves with additional back panels for stabilizing.
Regarding potential problems with the back panel: It is usually fixed with small nails, but it is important to align the back panel precisely before securing it and not to fasten it while the side panels are still not fully stabilized. I recommend not hammering the nails all the way in initially, but tightening them later to allow for any necessary adjustments.
When inserting the shelves, the included dowels are a bit too short – it’s worth checking in advance if all dowels fit fully into the holes, otherwise the shelf will be unstable.
Equally important: When tightening the connecting screws (Minifix/Dexter), a torque wrench designed for furniture should be used, as the specified tensile strength prohibits over-tightening. Especially with particle board, too much torque can quickly cause edges to tear out.
In my experience, the perfect combination of gentle pressure and carefully checking the drill holes is key to preventing assembly errors.

1. Preparation – check all parts for damage and completenessHonestly: many buyers only half-heartedly put aside the assembly instructions and reassure themselves with "It’ll be fine, I’ll just put it together!"
I think that’s exactly where the problem lies – anyone who ignores the basics and screws things together blindly shouldn’t be surprised by mistakes.

Check material quality and proper fitting of the dowelsI completely agree. Especially with Billy, whose particleboard quality is far from premium, you have to be careful.
Tightening too quickly or too hard causes more damage than good. My advice: better to proceed more cautiously than to try to “reinforce” it with brute force.
Based on my experience, many people underestimate the importance of aligning the side panels and the back panel simultaneously.
When assembling, this is how I did it: After loosely fitting the side panels together, I first placed the shelf gently against the wall to maintain the correct right angle, then inserted the back panel. Especially with the Billy shelf, it is often the back panel that provides stability.
Therefore, I recommend using a spirit level during assembly and fully aligning the shelf before tightening all screws completely. This helps prevent wobbly shelves or damage to the wood later on.

"Those who tighten too quickly and too firmly cause more damage than good."That is absolutely true. Especially as a beginner, I had the problem of overtightening the screws because I thought the shelf needed to be rock solid. In the end, the shelf was actually less stable because parts caused the wood to swell or split.
Maybe it should be emphasized more often here: "Tighten firmly, but with care." 🙂

Is there a practical checklist or proven tips that specifically address the critical phases of assembly? Here is a final checklist to help avoid mistakes when assembling the Billy shelf:
- Step 1: Check the work surface – it should be level, stable, and clean
- Step 2: Inspect all parts and fasteners for completeness and damage
- Step 3: Read the entire instruction manual and plan your time
- Step 4: Align and secure the side panels – check that the drill holes fit precisely
- Step 5: Insert dowels carefully and fully
- Step 6: Insert the shelves evenly and without forcing
- Step 7: Screw in screws by hand, working from the inside out
- Step 8: Position the back panel correctly and secure it with the screw nail before gently hammering it in
- Step 9: Check the alignment with a spirit level
- Step 10: If necessary, place rubber pads under the feet to protect the floor and prevent wobbling
Common mistakes are
- Over-tightening screws
- Misaligning the back panel
- Confusing dowel and screw types
With some patience and this checklist, your Billy shelf should be sturdy and free of errors.
