ᐅ Why is the assembly of BILLY shelves sometimes more challenging than expected?

nojo54Hello everyone,
Recently, I have assembled several BILLY shelves from IKEA, but each time the assembly turned out to be more complicated than I initially expected. Since the instructions are actually quite clear, I’m wondering why the process is often more difficult than anticipated. Is it due to the fit of the parts, the wording of the instructions, or are there simply practical assembly tips missing that one should know before starting?
I’m interested in your experiences and maybe specific reasons why a seemingly simple shelf becomes a relatively complex project. Are there common mistakes or tool-related issues? Thanks in advance for your insights!

why assembling is often more difficult than expected. That’s exactly the point many people underestimate! The BILLY shelves look simple, but fitting the back panel can really test your patience. I often had trouble at first because the backing didn’t fit properly due to the slats being slightly misaligned.
The instructions are helpful, but they don’t always explain the best approach when parts don’t fit perfectly. Just don’t get frustrated! With a bit of patience and staying calm, it usually works out well in the end 🙂 And hey, every small success during assembly feels like a big win!

Installing the back panel can really test your patience.Exactly, the back panel is often the bottleneck. Important: Do not fully tighten all screws at first. This makes everything fit more easily. Only tighten everything at the end.

Is it due to the precision of the parts, the instruction texts, or are practical assembly tips simply missing that you should know before starting? These are all important points. I have often assembled BILLY shelves and can explain this in more detail:
1. Fit and Precision: IKEA manufactures very cost-effectively, which shows in the drilling and rebate measurements. Some boards fit noticeably tighter, while others have some play, which can be frustrating, especially with the back panel. This can also be due to slight manufacturing tolerances that vary depending on the batch.
2. Instructions: The illustrations are clear, but there are often missing notes about the order of screw installation, which makes alignment difficult without prior experience. It is essential to initially tighten all screws only by hand to avoid shrinkage or warping later.
3. Assembly Errors: Many underestimate how to handle the included dowels and screws. For example, pre-drilling the dowel holes too aggressively can damage the wood and reduce stability.
4. Tools: The small supplied Allen key is often sufficient but can quickly cause fatigue or uneven torque. A better screwdriver or cordless drill with torque control greatly simplifies the work.
One final tip: Before starting, check all parts for damage and match the drill holes. This will save a lot of trouble later. If you like, feel free to share exactly where it got complicated for you so I can provide more targeted help.
I hope this explanation helps!
