Hello everyone, I want to equip my Ikea Pax wardrobe doors with magnetic catches because the original latches are not very reliable and the doors sometimes remain slightly ajar. My question is: which types of magnetic catches are best suited for Pax doors, and what is the easiest and safest way to install them without damaging the doors or the frame? I am especially looking for advice on the appropriate magnet strength, optimal positioning, and any useful tools or mounting materials. If anyone has already done a project like this, I would be very grateful for detailed tips or instructions.

You should use small neodymium magnets that are strong enough but not too large. Attach them with strong double-sided tape or screws if you prefer to drill. Position the magnets where the door and frame are close to each other.

To cover the topic in detail: Installing magnetic catches on Ikea Pax doors requires some preparation and precision. First, I recommend measuring the door from the inside to identify the exact contact points where the door and the cabinet body are closest. For the magnets, strong neodymium magnets are ideal because they provide high holding force despite their small size. A common size is round with about 10–15 mm (0.4–0.6 inches) diameter and a holding force of 2–3 kg (4.4–6.6 lbs).

The installation can be done either by screwing or gluing. Screws always provide a more secure hold, but it is important to drill the hole carefully to avoid damaging the door. An alternative is strong 3M adhesive pads that are virtually invisible and offer strong adhesion.

Important: The magnets should be positioned exactly opposite the recessed metal plate so that closing the door is smooth and not difficult. It’s best to use mounting glue or double-sided tape to test the position before permanently fixing them.

Finally, I recommend adjusting the holding force individually, especially for cabinets with multiple doors, since magnets that are too strong can damage the door when opened. If your doors come with fittings that do not include metal plates, you can add small metal plates yourself, which can also be glued or screwed on.

Simply attach magnetic closures at the top inside. Use neodymium magnets with metal plates on the door or frame. Gluing is usually sufficient; drilling is optional.

A systematic approach for your project: - Use neodymium magnets with sufficient holding force (at least 2 kg [4.4 lbs]) - Position magnets and counterparts so that they are tightly aligned when the door is closed - Check correct alignment and gap measurements before fixing - Screw mounting is more stable, but only drill if you do not want to damage the doors - Alternatively, use strong double-sided adhesive pads - Keep in mind that plexiglass or glass doors have different requirements than wooden fronts

These points ensure lasting functionality and gentle handling of the doors.

Thank you very much for the detailed response. How exactly should one drill if choosing to screw in the magnets? Are there specific drill bits or recommended techniques to prevent the Pax door material from chipping or cracking? Additionally, I am interested in whether there are different recommendations for the Pax doors made of plexiglass, since that material is more delicate.
