Hello everyone, I recently installed an IKEA Metod kitchen, including the matching countertops. Now I am wondering: How can I properly and safely clean these kitchen countertops without damaging the surface or voiding the warranty?

I know that cleaning products and methods vary for different surfaces like laminate or wood. The Metod countertops are supposed to be durable, but I still don’t want to just use any household cleaner.

Which cleaning agents are truly suitable for IKEA Metod kitchen countertops? Are there any special tips for stubborn stains? And what should be avoided at all costs?

I look forward to your experiences and recommendations. Thank you in advance!

Hello burakpin,

First of all, this is a good concern, as proper care of Metod countertops is important for long-lasting satisfaction. Generally, most IKEA Metod countertops come with a protective surface that tolerates damp wiping well.

- For regular cleaning, I recommend using warm water with a bit of dish soap and cleaning the surface with a soft cloth or sponge.
- Stubborn stains can usually be removed with a mild all-purpose cleaner. It is important not to use abrasive or aggressive products, as they can damage the surface.
- Definitely avoid abrasive sponges, strong acids (e.g., vinegar essence, citric acid), or harsh solvents such as acetone or paint thinner.

If you have stains from paint or dried adhesive, soaking with a damp cloth followed by gentle wiping usually helps.

It is important to always rinse with clear water afterward and dry the countertop well to avoid water marks.

If your countertop is made from a specific material (e.g., laminate, solid wood, or natural stone), please feel free to add that information, and I will gladly provide more specialized advice.

That’s a sensible approach! However, durability doesn’t mean you can use every cleaning product freely. IKEA usually provides care instructions, which typically recommend cleaning with mild cleaners and a lint-free cloth.

You should also check the specific type of material. Most Metod countertops are either laminate, solid wood, or coated with a melamine resin surface. Each surface requires different care:

- Laminate countertops do not tolerate overly wet cloths, as water can seep into the edges.
- Solid wood countertops should never be cleaned with excessive moisture and should be oiled or waxed afterward.

I agree with that. Abrasive products can damage the protective layer.

Also, it’s important to test cleaning attempts first in an inconspicuous area to prevent damage.

If specific information is missing, a thorough look at the IKEA product description or care sheet can provide clarity.

Hello burakpin,

For IKEA Metod countertops:
- Clean with a damp cloth and a little dish soap.
- Avoid abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals.
- For stains: soak first, then gently wipe.

This will keep the surface intact and clean.
