Hello everyone,

I have a problem with my Billy shelves from IKEA, which I have properly mounted using the intended wall fasteners. Despite this, I notice that the shelves wobble when I lightly kick them or take something out. The fasteners are correctly installed, and I have already tightened the screws. It can’t be the wall itself, as it is solid, and the anchors I used are supposedly suitable.

Can someone explain how it is possible that the shelves still wobble despite correct wall mounting? Are there any special tips or tricks to permanently solve this issue? I mainly use the shelves for storing books and want to avoid them becoming unstable over time.

Looking forward to your experiences and suggestions!

Your issue sounds like the wall mounting alone is not sufficient to prevent tipping or sideways movement. With BILLY shelves, it is common that even after wall mounting, some lateral instability remains, especially when the shelves are tall and narrow.

Make sure to check that the shelves are level and that the back panel is securely fixed. The back panel provides stability – if there is a gap here, it usually causes wobbling.

Additionally, I recommend reinforcing the wall attachment points with standard angle brackets to make the connection more stable.

Hey, it’s really frustrating when the shelf wobbles even though you’ve done everything correctly! 🙂

I had the same problem once – what helped me was securing the shelves to the floor with small stoppers or anti-slip pads, in addition to fixing them to the wall. This can be especially effective if the floor isn’t perfectly level!

Also, check if the shelf boards themselves are firmly in place and not loose; that often makes a difference. Keep your spirits up, you’ll get it sorted! :-)

Thanks for the tip. The back panel is indeed a bit loose because the fastening screws there aren’t perfectly secured. Is it normal for the BILLY back panel to be attached only with small nails or thin screws?

I find the idea of using anti-slip pads interesting. I will give that a try. Still, I think the wobbling mainly comes from the shelf-to-wall connection since this is a longer shelf.

Does anyone have experience if the problem improves when using multiple BILLY units connected with joining fittings?

The wobbling of a BILLY shelf unit despite wall mounting can have several causes that should be checked systematically:

1. Installation quality – the screws in both the wall and the shelf must be properly secured and should not be too loose or too tight to avoid damage to the materials.

2. Back panel attachment – in BILLY shelves, the thin back panel stabilizes the entire structure. If the back panel is unevenly installed or damaged, the shelf can become unstable.

3. Wall condition – even if the wall appears solid, choosing the right type of wall plug (anchor) is crucial. Concrete, brick, or drywall (plasterboard) all require different fixing methods.

4. Load distribution – uneven weight can cause wobbling. Especially with tall shelves, heavy items should be placed at the bottom.

5. Connecting multiple units – using connectors (e.g., special BILLY connectors) can significantly increase overall stability.

My advice is to methodically go through these points to identify the cause.

Nail or screw the back panel securely, join the shelves, and place anti-slip pads underneath. Use suitable wall anchors / plugs for your wall. This should help prevent any wobbling.
